I was checking in online for my flight tomorrow, and there were 4 seats available in F. I looked at the Upgrade standby list on CO, and there were quite a few. Whats weird is that the Upgrade to first class was only $19. I don't know if the UDU would have cleared or not, but i think $19 extra is an acceptable price to pay for first for a 4-5 hour flight :D

For 1.9 Tens of Dollars I'd have probably paid the $19 ...If you're on a higher fare class that might be why.

If you don't mind, could you share what status you have with UA/CO and what was your original fare class?

that sounds like it's in the spirit of the new MileagePlus where cash in hand customer will trump UDU's. But I thought they wouldn't sell out MP elites for $20

Technically they aren't selling upgrades they're selling you a First Class ticket, so for example say he was on CO DEN-EWR and bought a M fare, there is no M-UP for Golds but B-UP and the difference between M and B was $19 as an example... this would be a legitimate First Class purchase not an upgrade.

Could you share any information about your ticketed fare basis and amount paid? This information is important to know in order to determine whether the system is operating as advertised in this case.

Those upgrades never book in F though. I've done them in the past, but still get Y miles.

Correct because it's either a M-UP, B-UP, Y-UP so you'd get the Y miles and associated bonuses if done via CO.

On the day of departure ones I do not believe you get the Y/B CoS bonus miles, though you do if you up in advance of the day of departure.

I would spend 19$ for a first class upgrade on almost any route that lasts more than 1 hour.

I agree, that's why I bought it, although I am curious if the complimentary UDU would have cleared

I was on a G fare with no status other than "Elite Access" from Chase over MLK day weekend BWI -> SAN ($150/fare) with stops and the upgrades where never priced less than $300.

E is very high up on the hierarchical ladder at CO... Y B M E so you might have paid $19 for the E to M-UP or B-UP on this specific sector...

My last DEN-EWR (sadly, the miserable redeye) was 2:48 enroute ;)

On some random dates, the difference between E and M fares on DEN-EWR is usually less than $40. If you paid $129 for your ticket and were offered a $19 upgrade, I would agree with those who claim the system is "broken". In this instance, the system is working as-advertised, despite our objections to it in principle.

Whee, another case of CO selling upgrades out from under elites. Lame.

Sounds like it was a buy up to an M-up fare.

Except that it is only available to top elites at this price, so not really selling it out from under them.

Oh, and the OP could have bought it at the time of ticketing or any time thereafter for the same fare difference.

Although what you are saying is true in practice, it doesn't hold true in my case. My flights are bought through the corporate travel website for my firm, and we dont get to choose fare class, just lowest available non-refundable economy fare :(
