    IIRC there was previous talk of it being purchased by the Sultan of Brunei and plans to protest this, given Brunei's strict religious laws and treatment of certain groups of individuals (women, nonmuslims, etc.). I think there was also a Beverly Hills hotel purchase.

    Yes, the Sultan of Brunei already owns the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hotel Bel Air. Earlier his brother Prince Jefri had owned the New York Palace Hotel before it was eventually sold by his brother the Sultan of Brunei. So far, it is pure speculation that the Sultan of Brunei has purchased the Plaza Hotel. We will see in the future who owns what.
