The Sunday 2/19/2012 NY Times Travel Section has an article on page on How to attain Hotel Elite Status. However they only describe 4 programs: Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Starwood. Guess the author never heard of Priority Club, Best Western, Choice, Fairmont, and so on,

I'm surprised PC isn't on there considering they are one of the largest chains... Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and *wood are definitely the "majors" in the hotel industry so understandable

"Just 2 percent of travelers drive 30 percent of Starwood’s profits"

    Pretty interesting info.

Once again, the journalists don't make the distinction between late checkouts upon request and being guaranteed.

Actually, having known the author from her early days back when she covered travel at the Wall Street Journal, I can tell you that she indeed has heard of FlyerTalk.. and she has also known Randy Petersen for quite awhile, since I introduced her to him at the Freddie Awards about 13 years ago! :)

I stopped reading such articles altogether as I find that there is little that they teach anyone who has been active on milepoint and/or at the "other site", which are the authoritative voices on "HOW TO" anything related to loyalty programs...

Yes. But take someone like my wife. She is not interested in spending hours and hours on sites like this to learn all the ins and outs of various programs. She relies on me (and thus it would be an utter waste of her time to learn it as well). But even if she couldn't rely on me to take care of her loyalty program needs, I don't think she'd be interested enough to learn what I have learned. But she read the article this morning as part of her daily routine of reading the NY Times on her iPad, learned a bit about what loyalty gets you and asked "what elite statuses do we have?"

I am suprised it is only 30% of Starwoods profits- I would have thought more.

Limited space? Maybe they didn't find the lower-level tiers attractive enough? (heck, I am Platinum with PC and it's not something I write home about)

Good point- the PC program is only really interesting at AMB/RA levels, and this only applies to IC hotels (where it was difficult to earn many points in until the recent changes).

The writer should have mentioned that the programs occasionally offer promotional status upgrades.

Exactly. You posted it first, even in the same forum and still appearing on the first page, maybe about ten threads below this one. I wish people would put a little effort into checking whether something has already been posted on MP before starting a new thread.

Perhaps you might think of switching to a new 4G Android device like the Nexus with ICS or sumtin! ;) Would that help? :D LOL! :) Have a great one! :)

I disagree. That really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. As far as collecting points, Platinum sure as heck beats basic membership.

It would be sad if it didn't :) However, the article really looks at entry level elite status. And I really don't know that Gold Elite status would be worth mentioning if the whole point of the article is to show readers that it's worth working towards status.
