Now this is how you get compensation for a delayed flight!! Stage a mass protest and stand in front of the plane for a 3 hr flight delay. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201102271582726 http://nationalmirroronline.net/business/6758.html Punch:Scores of Kaduna-bound passengers at the old domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Saturday, protested the delay of their flight by Arik Air. Eye witnesses said trouble started when the angry travellers insisted that the airline should compensate them for delaying the flight for no clear reason. Unconfirmed sources said some of the aggrieved passengers, who refused to board the aircraft when Arik eventually called for boarding, gathered in front of the plane to stop it from taking off. As at press time, the length of the delay could not be confirmed. The Media Officer, Arik, Mr. Adebanji Ola, who explained that the delay was due to operational reasons, said the matter had since been resolved and that the plane had already departed. Adebanji added, “There was protest because the passengers said that they wanted immediate compensation for the delay and our officials told them that they could not get the compensation immediately, that it had to be according to the company’s policy. But the matter has been resolved and the plane has already departed." Our correspondent however gathered that the delay was due to shortage of aviation fuel at the time. Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria said that the angry passengers, who demanded ticket refund as a result of the delay, embarked on a protest because their request was not granted. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, which is the industry regulator, has been inundated with complaints from passengers over shabby treatment by most of the domestic carriers. The agency said it was partnering with a passenger service consultancy, Karamba Limited, to evolve some measures that would address issues surrounding passengers’ welfare. National Mirror: At least 100 passengers of Arik Air yesterday protested openly at the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA), Lagos for more than three hours due to a flight delay. The passengers, National Mirror gathered were on their way to Kaduna from Lagos, but had boarded the aircraft at GAT to the airport in Kaduna. One of the passengers who spoke with our correspondent on phone, Mr. Kenny Olori Oko of the Infinity Musical Group, said that the passengers decided to stage the protest because they were unduly delayed by the airline. According to him, the flight was scheduled to depart the Lagos airport at 11:40, delayed till 12:40 and as at 2:00pm on the fateful day, no information was forthcoming from the management of the airline on why the flight was delayed. The musician stated that during the delay, several aircraft departed the GAT to Abuja and Port Harcourt airports while the passengers of the airline were not attended to. To press home their demand, he stated that a particular passenger who was already boarded for the journey, disembarked and lied down on the nose of the aircraft while those who were yet to be checked in, continued to protest in the open. He said that after much delay, the passengers decided to stage a protest to the senior staff of the airline on ground who at that point informed them that the delay was caused by fuelling of the aircraft, which he said infuriated the passengers more and decided to call for compensation from them. Olori Oko, however said that the protest paid off as the management eventually agreed to compensate them with a 50 per cent rebate, adding that they never intended to embarrass the airline, but rather wanted to fight for their right. He said, "We were supposed to be airlifted at 11:40am, but as at 2pm, we were still on ground. Funny enough, other airlines were airlifting passengers while those of us with Arik Air were left unattended to. Again, the reason for the delay was not announced to us by the airline even though we requested that from them. This all ironically got changed to the following language that get emailed to all expatriate workers on our job site in Nigeria: Delayed Airline Passengers Contemplate Suicide, Lay On Tarmac: In what looked like a suicide mission, some passengers Saturday laid on the runway of the MMA tarmac urging a pilot of the Arik Air to run over them. They were protesting delay by the airline to take them to their destination in Kaduna. At least, one hundred passengers who were already inside the belly of the B737 airplane took part in the protest at the tarmac of the old domestic airport terminal in Lagos for more than three hours. However, the image-maker of the airline, Mr. Banji Ola, confirmed the incident and said the delay was necessitated by the need to refuel the aircraft. According to him, the flight was scheduled to depart the Lagos airport at 11:40 am, but was delayed till 12:40 and as at 2:00pm no information was forthcoming from the management of the airline on why the flight was delayed.
