Recently I booked a "parking package" on spg.com. The room rate included some additional days of outdoor self parking in the airport hotel's otherwise free parking lot. (No outside service provider, such as valet parking or a pay garage, was involved or even available at the property.)

When I received the itemized bill, it had some of the room rate put into the "other" column and the rest under "room and taxes." This seems to have caused me to lose some (triple according to the current promotion) points. Is this correct? I would have expected to receive points on the entire room rate (but not the taxes) as it appeared on my confirmation on spg.com.

If there was no mention of this in the T&Cs for the package/promo, then I can't imagine any justification for splitting it out as a separate charge without notice. Send it to SPG to have them correct it on your behalf.

However, what portion was split out? I trust that by making the "other" portion not subject to the room tax, it doesn't give you a tax advantage worthy of giving up the extra points, correct? For anyone that is not an SPG member, would this method have been favorable for them by decreasing their taxes?

Yes, the "other (parking)" part of $30 does seem to be tax exempt and that is exactly the difference between my parking package room rate and the equivalent alternative rate. The spg.com confirmation showed the total with taxes as if there were some taxes on the $30 difference too. The difference in taxes seems to be $4.30 based on the difference in total bill between spg.com estimate and the total I actually paid. However, I'm not aware of any SPG rule that says you only get points on taxable expenditures.
