I have booked a wedding function next month for 350-400 guest in one of the starwood's property which is costing me around $24,000. When i spoke to their banquet representative about starwood points, he mentioned that I cannot earn any starwood points on the wedding function.

Its quite upsetting to know that Starwood doesn't offer any points on wedding occasions booked in their hotel. I mean its not that we are getting few guest on the list for wedding function when compared to events or meetings booked which do earn points. I think they should start offering points like other hotels such as HIlton and IHG.

I would escalate this to the banquet manager's supervisor. If written into the contract, you should be able to earn Starwood Preferred Planner points at the rate of 1 Starpoint per $3 of eligible spend. Note: There is usually a 20K Starpoint limitation on earnings from events.

There is usually a separate page on the meeting (banquet) agreement to complete with SPG info for the points -shouldn't matter that it's a wedding.

Just as William says, one of my friends just was arranging a wedding for his daughter at a Starwood property. The hotel General Manager ending out involved, but he finished with one point per dollar spent. Barring William correcting me, based on my personal event planning experience, the points awarded are at the discretion of the property. They must pay Starwood for the pints, of course, so there is a negotiation. IME, they sometimes prefer points or other benefits to a cash discount. In my experience YMMV.

The 1 pt / $3 is pretty weak for most chains, but is also pretty automatic IME. Negotiation can certainly take place. In addition, I believe there are ways to earn status for your events TOTAL spend...not just what you pay for, but what others pay for as well.

And to me it sounds like you might have a signed contract already? If so you already negotiated with the property and they will have little reason to renegotiate and in effect decrease the amount they earn from your existing contract.

    Welcome to Milepoint ravenmiles
Sorry for the headache you are experiencing but Starwood does offer points as noted by SPG Champion but it will be dependent on the terms of your contract. Did you book directly with the hotel or initiated via Starwood Preferred Planner? I think, if the latter you should get points, the former would be based on your agreement with the hotel.

SPG was having a North American Wedding promotion but unfortunately, in the T&C it notes Offer must be referenced at start of negotiation process. You can see their offer and eligible hotels here - http://www.starwoodpromos.com/weddings/offers

I wish you best in trying to get the points and best wishes for the wedding.

Thanks for the wishes canuklehead. I have already signed the contract with the hotel and i did the booking directly with the hotel. What annoys me is that I had particularly asked about whether we could earn starpoints by any way for the wedding function to which they bluntly denied. I have already sent an email to their assistant sales manager at ITC Maratha, Andheri east, Mumbai, India on 24/07/2014 to which I haven't received any reply yet.
I also have emailed to 'preferredplanner at the rate starwoodhotels dot' com on 23/07/2014 asking about the promo and giving them rough description about the function in their participating. Still waiting for their reply.
Hope I get positive response from them.

Finally!!! I got a mail from one of Starwood Preferred Planner representative on 27th July. We exchanged a few emails giving details about the wedding date and the hotel details as they wanted to contact the concerned department in the hotel. Hopefully, I get positive response from them. Will keep you guys posted!!!

I hope you have got some points as you were given wrong information from an official representative

I re-read some of the posts and the "mention up front" seems like a clear statement that's either interpreted as
    > We can give you points but we will mark up the bill to pay for the points
    > We automatically offer a discount if you did not as for points as we assume the price is the single biggest factor in these situations

In your case it does not matter which as you were not offered the choice despite asking specifically on the topic. Maybe it comes off the commission?

But no matter how it is stated, there is certainly a cost to issuing points.
Kind of trying to purchase something (e.g. a car) with credit card :)

    Hello Everyone,

I would like to say that I am very disappointed from the ITC Maratha hotel located at Mumbai. I spoke directly to their Assistant Sales Manager who was part of my event and she refused to accept that there are any such offer being given by star woods for the wedding event. I still emailed to their banquet team to double check with them but to my luck they still haven't responded till now. Its been like more than 25 days now and i'm still struggling to make them understand about the starwood planner promo. I really don't know what to do now?? I guess when the prefered planner promo is removed then they might get back to me to ask for proof or any details. Its quite upsetting that none of the representatives of ITC Maratha Hotel at Mumbai are aware of the such promo. i'm still waiting for an email from the preferred planner representative that had got back to me last month by email asking me about the details about the hotel and wedding date. Please if anyone could offer any suggestions as to what should i do now, would be highly appreciated.

My apologies for any delay, but if you will send me the details of this either by email (preferred) or by Conversation here at Milepoint, I'll be glad to see if I can get some attention placed on it. I can't promise you'll get any Starpoints if your original contract did not include them; however, the property should know that this incentive exists, if they want to offer it.
