I had a now show at a SPG property recently. It was a pre-paid reservation. I could not make it. My card got charged, but no points. Has anyone ever contacted the Hotel and ask for points/stay credit for a now show? Any recent SPG experiences?

It is standard throughout the industry that one gets no points for no-shows, although one will be generally charged for 1 night...

I'll preface by saying I don't have recent SPG experiences about this. On the other hand, I can say pretty much without exception no-show = no-credit. I assume this is to keep people from hunting around for the cheapest special rate, booking and paying for it, and then claim credit for stays. In other words -- fast-tracking to elite status the cheapest way without actually staying.

You did read the T&Cs for a pre-paid stay?

from what i understand, it's a no, the only exception that i've come across is for Wyndham group of hotels last year where they granted stay credit for no-shows (there was a targeted promotion for a huge number of points to promote some new properties so some jumped on it to get the points), can recall though if it is in the Wyndham Rewards T&C or if it was a once-off offer for the no-show points..

    Dear Thomask,

You can receive Starpoints for no show charges, but it does not count as stay or night credit.

That's actually a very good solution to a "no-show": there is no elite-qualifying night or stay credit so that there is no potential to abuse "no-show" to try to achieve status; but, at the same time, people with a legitimate reason for not showing can still get something out of it, especially since they will be charged for 1 night regardless...;)

Is this a change to the T&C quoted in the post just above yours?

What the Official SPG Representative stated does, indeed, appear to contradict what is stated in the program's T&C.

I rarely buy prepaid rooms, but I've had a couple of stays where my flight got canceled and I couldn't make it. I've called the hotel and tell them I can't make it and that I don't want the money back, but it'd be great if they could check me in and out so I at least could get the points. Stay and everything posted for me like I was there (minus the room service I didn't have ;)).

    These were SPG properties.

Thanks. I wish I would have known that before. I contacted the property now and will see what they write. I will keep in mind for future.

If you "no show" without canceling, the hotel should post the points for the room charge (not taxes), but it will not result in stay/night credit.

In addition, if your stay is for a hotel that does not participate in the SPG program, your reservation did not include your SPG details, your stay is not paid(or prepaid in this case) by you during check-out or it is of an ineligible paying rate, then you would not receive any Starpoints.

    Hope this clarifies.

Thank you. One more thing, though. I think by "the hotel should post the points for the room charge (not taxes), but it will not result in stay/night credit" you meant room charge for one night and not for the entire stay if the stay is longer than one night, right?

The Starpoints that would be posted for the "no-show" would be equal to whatever amount was agreed to in the terms of the reservation. Most charge a one-night penalty; however, some charge for the full stay.
