I was in BF Thursday EWR - BOM and got the old UA ice cream bomb. I asked the FA where the sundaes were and she replied: we got a memo yesterday, they replaced them with these.

If this is true, its cheaping out to a degree that is hard to imagine, particularly on fares that start at over $4k.

I'm flying that route in June. Guess I'll have to bring my own sundae.

There should be a choice for desert. In the past, there was always the option of Eli's Cheesecake which was a great option, and the old CO used to have a BF trolley with a selection of miniature deserts. Bringing these options back would be great. Baskin Robbins as the sole desert option cheapens BF & F, but everyone has their one preference. Now serving some gelato to accompany a nice desert, this would be excellent.

Well I'm hoping that since there haven't been any "heard this too" posts that this was simply a catering issue. We'll see on my flight out.

While I love ice cream, if I was spending north of $4k on a ticket, ice cream or sundaes would not be at the top of my list of expectations.

Ha. Nor is it mine. However, the ice cream bomb is a whole lot less elegant - from a service and experience perspective- than sundaes. I do have personal preferences that are different than a sundae, but I'm just curious if this is another cost saving measure on a very high dollar route.

Sadly my last BF UA flight was 3/30, but I did get a sundae that day. Not sure what has been happening since but I'll ask.

And I agree that having the choice is always nice.

So what I was told on my return flight was that at some point last week their kitchens ran out of ice cream (and lettuce) but that there's been no (announced) change. Again, from a f/a so, consider the source. I'm at least glad that there doesn't seem to be a policy change. I did learn that on flights after 9 pm, crews try to cut down the time they spend on B/F service to give people time to sleep.

    Ultimately...who really cares. It's just a dessert.

I'd personally prefer warm apple pie a la mode to a sundae, but I'm happy with sundaes, and they aren't going away. :)

I asked my friend if she got a sundae last weekend on her SFO-LHR BF flight, and she did. She asked me why I cared, and I said because I need to get a life, but I'm not ready to commit to it yet.

Personally, I always turn down the sundae because I'm already fat enough.

I'm unsure what to say as I do wonder if this is a financially necessary or useful change given the cost of catering that sundae even multiplied across all flights needing it. Ugh, I'm torn here ...

The part where it isn't actually a change should help you in your decision making there.

It happened as a one-off event, not a policy change.
