The EI-operated route is going away at the end of October apparently. UA has informed Aer Lingus that they will be terminating the deal. That isn't too surprising to me.

What is slightly surprising is that the route is apparently being axed rather than having UA metal swapped in. I figured this was a route that a 2-cabin 763 would work well on. Maybe only seasonally. Perhaps we'll see it back in the Spring.

Perhaps the Spanish economy is currently not making it profitable enough?

How many of the reconfigured 763s do they have available at this time (and by October)?

A co-worker just flew back yesterday MAD-IAD and said the service was awesome, and cabin was quite empty.

I'd like to get that line.

I saw today that Aer Lingus is increasing their ORD-DUB route from daily to 11 weekly, so that route is obviously going well.

I wonder if UA are thinking about starting ORD-DUB on their own metal as the demand is obviously there

Why is it a "controversial pact"?

The wife and I flew this in March of this year. It was nice. Good service, good GF meal for her.

The UA pilots' union whining about how this takes jobs away from them. Which, since UA apparently isn't going to serve this route on their own metal, is a bunch of BS.

Well, I don't know... hard to tell if the higher cost of UA pilots is the only reason why this flight is apparently getting discontinued (vs. moved to UA metal). ATH got abandoned, too, as far as I recall, and that was on UA (or CO) metal. Economy at the other end of the route might have something to do with it, I would think.

    Can I use a single SWU on SFO-IAD-MAD? ;)

ETA: W is an extra $350 rt to play the lottery  I don't think so, UA. Is C even lie-flat on this route?

If UA was going to get a new pilot contract cancelling this JV was always a foregone conclusion.

Flew this route last fall. It was surprisingly decent and a packed plane on the Monday after Thanksgiving.

The airport was a MAD house...

Puns aside, I imagine with the demise of Spanair there is extra incentive to just route this traffic through ORD or FRA/MUC.

Actually with the demise of Spanair there is now no onward feed to justify the route out of anywhere except the current EWR-MAD and so on...
