Air Canada Launches New Regional Brand

Air Canada is set to rebrand its entire regional fleet under a new moniker, “Air Canada express,” putting an end to its Jazz brand and opening the door to additional regional partnerships.
The move comes just days before Air Canada is set to launch its new service from Toronto Island on Sunday using a small fleet of Bombardier Q400s operated by Sky Regional Airlines Inc.
The rationale for creating the new brand is to harmonize the flying provided by both Sky Regional and Air Canada’s traditional regional partners — mainly Chorus Aviation Inc. through its subsidiary Jazz Aviation LP — a source familiar with the plan said. The source also said the aim would be to eventually fold any new regional partners under the same “express” umbrella.

It is a bland moniker.....not original and copying other airlines use of the name express.

I actually liked the Jazz name- kind of a nice way of softening the blow of long DH8 flights...

Not original, and not much of a brand. But it's a descriptive add-on to the main brand -- "Air Canada".

I suppose it does sound better than "Air Canada with a very small plane which is louder, possibly slower, and has poorer catering..."

Makes sense to me given Jazz is the name of a specific airline. Now that they are using other airlines for regional partners it makes more sense to have a unified second-teir service name.

Note, Alaska is doing this as well, with the changes going on with their Horizon subsidiary.

meh, when I think express, I think of all the regional US carriers, Mesa, ASA.... and the association is not so great.

Personally, they should have went with something original like Air Canada Sprint (short distance run...)

Except that many of the runs are not that short. And it has to be bilingual.

True about the short distance part, though it flights are more likely to be short-hauls.
It may also be argued that the Jazz flights may not be so express (given the DH8s fly at a slower speed).

IIRC, sprint is also used in French

just a suggestion as I am not fond of flying the "Express" planes of US carriers.

When I think of express I think of a small, peppy, full function product for a smaller market :) My company has a couple of "express" versions :)

Hmm... With no offense to your company or any other, I cannot think of a single "express" version product I really like (although in some smaller towns a Holiday Inn Express is welcomed compared to the alternatives!). Express usually equals less features/benefits for the same price.... :)

Doen't fix the core piece that Jazz is the name of an airline... and when I think of Sprint I think of bad telephone service ;)

  18. Its gonna allow them to play other small aircraft operators off each to get the lowest rate possible.
This is not a good thing.

Its what US carriers and you end up with situations like the crash in Buffalo, with exhausted low paid crews, with limited experience, as thats all the operator can afford if it wants to secure the contract.

I used to subscribe to Sprint and thought they had a very good product (reception), but their CS was awful. I am drawing no parallel lines! :p

The font for "express" looks weird. Maybe it's just the curvature of the fuselage, but the bottom part of the letters look squished to me. http://yfrog.com/h86parnj

So as "Jazz" has always been a Star Alliance carrier unlike say the regional arm of SQ.....will this new express also be a Star Alliance carrier ? I don't see the sticker on the aircraft.......
