I'm flying with a friend to Japan on a United 747-400 jet. In selecting our seats, should we be side by side (ie 10J and 10K) or do the seats face each other (i.e. 9K and 10K)?

    Thanks!

The backward- and forward-facing seats are separated by console that includes the end of the footrest for the bed, video monitor, and a storage shelf. So, you really won't be able to see each other if you're "facing;" in fact, you'll be separated by at least ten feet of space and a wall that's four feet or so tall. If you'd like to be together, sit in side-by-side seats.

I would try to get two seats on the upper deck if they are available...you have the side storage next to the window seats upstairs.

If you are on a 747-400, definitely the upper deck. It's like a small private jet up there. I liked the backward facing seats, because the plane naturally has a slight upward pitch your head will be a bit higher than your legs.
