Interesting. Astonishing to find my home town as #1. Actually we all are astonished at that here in Rio de Janeiro. I love my city but...
I have been to all but twelve of these, and mostly understand why these all would be on such a list.
Now my resolution must be to go to the remaining twelve.
    Thanks for posting this.

Seems like a fair list with some interesting newer ideas- Pecs Hungary however is a bit strange IMHO.

Glad to see DC on the list and a photo of the newly opened Union Market which has become one of my favorite places to go for great local food!

Lens, France? Really? There is one thing there. Yes one thing, a branch of the Louvre.

Some of the locations seem a little questionable to me, but there are others I find intriguing. I'm bookmarking this article for the next time I need trip ideas.

I suspect we all agree with you. The NYT did not IIRC give any notion that these were the 'best' of anything. I've downloaded the article too.

    Well the article was entitled
The 46 Places to Go in 2013

Which led at least me to believe they must be best? I also saved the article as there were a few good ideas. FT (Financial Times not something else) published a similar idea with 5 places a couple of weeks ago- and the Uganda safari trips they were mentioning are now firmly in my mind for 2013 fall/winter.

Although years ago, I loved Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Lake Manyara in particular is an astonishing place, not least because of tree-climbing lions.

You are making me want to prioritize my trip from fall to earlier!

The only point in a number of these "places to go" surveys I find a bit "been there many times not new information" is Croatia- Croatia has been on the tourist map for many many many years- I don't know if that is really news?

On the flipside- developments in Sicily are making it look much better than ever for 2013.

Croatia has been a prime spot for Europeans for a couple fo decades, more for Italians. Istria, for example, is a high priority destination for foodies because they have some of the best truffles in the world. Mrs. jbc and I are addicted. Split has a hotel inside Diocletians palace, Dubrovnik is magnificent if stuffed with tourists and the rest of Croatia is filled with delightful places for mountaineering, island relaxing and on and on. If you've not been there go NOW!!:D

With all of these lists many people have already been to the places, so the information is rarely new to people who've been there. It seems to be that is not the point. The point is to suggest places everyone has not seen, or think they know about. Anyway that is what I think, so I am happy that they include places taht are very well known as well as ones that are more obscure, perhaps.

I have been going to Croatia for ~ 20 years now and do agree that the time to go is always Now although the prices have shot through the roof recently. Last year I wanted to go for one of the infamous "ponte" weekends and was quoted a rate for the hotel of 700 EUR... a night! Needless to say Sardegna turned out to be much less expensive and nicer.

Wow! That would change my view also. I've been in Croatia at peak times on occasion, but I've never paid any more than about 250EUR, and that was in Dubrovnik.

    Exactly.
Some of the yield management "techniques" are really a bit too much.
My thinking is that while Croatia is beautiful- it is neither Sardegna nor Sicilia. If I can get to Sardegna or Sicilia for less money and in the same or less time.... Ciao!

  19. Sicily has become my number one place to go in Italy after the mandatory stop in Rome for family visits. I really like Palermo and all the other sites and places.

    Taormina is also great.

If you want a completely different Italy experience do head into the Dolomites in the North- whether summer or winter there is something wonderful being offered in Italy!

  21. We have driven from Austria into Italy several times and I most definitely agree with you about that area. We also really like Lago de como area in the north.

What a thread! I seem to agree with you all. Austria to Italy brings up Slovenia, which has a number of my favorites. Lake Bled is so beautiful I never get tired of a day or so there.

Agree on Bled. It is great.

Also the area "between" Villach and Salzburg and Munich as well as all of Bolzano and Belluno provinces (roughly explained) contains so many little gem areas that are excellent for a couple of days. In fact this weekend I am headed to San Candido!
