This is no doubt to compete with DL's RDU/LAX Service...

Wish we had that in CLT.

CLT-SFO? Doesn't US fly that route already and UA codeshares?

I thought DL dropped that route?

How? One goes to LAX and the other to SFO.

Seems more like feed to the ex-SFO Asia flights based on the timing.

Dl offers an non-stop option to the West Coast, so now UA has an non-stop option to the West Coast and this competes.

The DL flight would also serve as a feed ex-LAX to the Asian/Austrlian routes. However I think DL dropped that route, so moot point.

The timing of the flight realistically only connects to SYD (tight) and HND (3h later).

At risk of stating the obvious, it's only a non-stop if you live in LA or want to go there. :)

Looks like RDU-LAX is currently served year round on DL, but it's not daily. I did a month's search on ITA for May, July, and November, and it looks to be 3x/week in May/November, and 4x/week in July. So seems like 4x/week during peak summer season, 3x/week otherwise.

Only non-stop if you live in one of the two biggest markets on the West Coast. Otherwise you likely already had a litany of one-stop options.

And if you live in one of them, this one doesn't actually help you get to the other one all that much better. Hence my confusion over where the competition is.

Indeed, RDU connections via DEN, ORD, SLC, DTW, even IAH or ATL are probably better for much of the West Coast than a stop in LAX or SFO.

I agree with those who say this is a primarily O&D-oriented route with the prospect of some incremental Pacific feed.

According to this USA Today article (that also mentions the re-instatement of the IAD-FLL route), Jim Ferea -- United's managing director for domestic planning -- says San Francisco is the largest unserved market from Raleigh-Durham and vice versa.

TIL that AA operates a non-stop RDU-LHR. It makes me wonder if UA is gunning for of GlaxoSmithKline's business or is adding this route at the request of GSK.
