"We don't really care about rewarding the people in the back of the plane"... Wonder how long that mantra can continue. If the economic issues continue in Europe and filter over here you really have to wonder if the C cabin can continue to finance the operation. Say oil/gas spikes again and the Y cabins just aren't selling, what's the plan to draw people back?

I know miles aren't the only reason people fly an airline, but if there's a better price out there on a better product and your differentiation was your mileage program, how do you recover?

I mainly fly Lufthansa, so I wanted to see how this affected me. I clicked on the Lufthansa logo on that page, and it says that for flights on or after March 1, it's the same scheme as UA MP: 5x ticket price for general MP members, up to 11x for MP 1Ks.

That's if you fly on :eek:16 tickets. For partner tickets issued on other ticket stock the earning rates drop down considerably for the lower fare buckets. For LH it goes down as low as 50%. ANA and presumably others have a minimum of 25%.

The key is if it isn't a UA ticket. Meaning, you don't buy on united.com or your first segment is on LH.

I could see using bonuses as a means of temporarily luring people in, similarly to what we saw during the last big crisis in 2009. It's far easier to run promotional bonuses as the carrot to tempt passengers than it is to offer better than average mileage earning on an on-going bonus, since bonuses don't require program rule changes.

For those keeping score at home it is ~72 better and ~177 worse. Some of the better come at the very low fare levels like LX K/L/T now earning at 50% versus nil. Not really sure that's a good thing or not.

What's incredible is that H and M fare earnings drop. Those aren't cheap fare classes on any carrier.

Will UA elites still earn a minimum 500 PQMs per segment on LH & SN?

Ahhh, now I understand. Thank you.

[Being IAD-based, I buy all LH tickets on 016 ticket stock, because my first flight is always a United codeshare to Frankfurt or a UA metal flight to Munich. I didn't even consider the scenario of buying LH tickets from LH or another source.]

Not surprising - basically the same as consolidator ticket UA earning. Generally 50% on cheapo economy.

There are a few curious things such as 25% on NH K, and cheapo Asiana maintaining 70%.

Crap! This is now a double revenue-based system. The reason for this real devaluation of partner earning rates is to prevent folks from doing what I was contemplating doing as an alternate to the R-B.S. After making 1MM, I had planned to start flying with *A partners on non-016 tickets to keep earning miles based on distance traveled. While that is still doable, they just made things such that in order to earn 100% RDMs on most *A carriers, one would have to purchase at least a full-fare economy ticket , which would be costly -- in fact, so costly that one might be better off spending the money on a UA ticket to potentially earn more miles based on cost than on distance traveled. The open season on loyalty flyers continues and it is Really Shitty!

Except the bonuses may only be for flying UA metal. I've seen AA do things with JL in really low season when the cabins weren't selling, but why give bonuses for flying partner metal?

I think if they give out (more) RDM bonuses, it'll likely be on UA metal for middle-priced economy (W/V/Q or higher) instead of the deep discount buckets (G/K/L/T).

Delta has long planned to move to dynamic award pricing as the next stage of FFP "evolution" -- no idea when they actually make it reality.

Did anyone really think these changes would not happen when UA itself was reducing significantly the non-premium fare RDMs? Why would other STAR members continue to fork over (and pay for) more miles than UA itself? It's a new paradigm for FF programs. BA announced a major revenue-based evolution of Avios and Executive Club yesterday too.

This is the "other shoe"...that happened last February...where were you?

This will kill off credit card loyalty. At those redemption rates (think Expedia rewards), a mileage-earning credit card is a sucker's bet. Cash back cards become king at that that point.

If I might offer a small amendment, counselor: That will kill off credit card spend loyalty. There are certainly some cards I keep simply because of the other benefits of having the card, but I don't put any spend on them.

That's enough to kill the golden goose. The sale of points to the credit card companies is a huge moneymaker for the airlines.

Wonder how that will go over with the likes of Chase, Amex or Citi. Will they prepay for a quadrillion miles the next time an airline needs rescuing?

And... what does it do to the valuation of the miles the banks may still have on their books from prepaying a few years ago if suddenly there is less demand for them.

Fair point. I have to admit, I've never actually looked: how do Southwest and Virgin America do with making money from their credit card partners?

Dunno. It would be interesting to see a side-by-side comparison of percentage of revenue derived from points sales to credit card companies by the majors and WN.

I disagree on this point. CC spend is now THE way to best accumulate points. If anything this sort of move pushes the low-fare FF-loyal customers to pump more spend via the CCs where possible so they can continue to redeem.

    Quite well.
