Strategic Hotels has purchased the Jumeriah Essex House from Dubai Investment Group and hired Marriott to manage it as the JW Marriott Essex House NYC. The deal is expected to close on September 7, 2012.

The property saw a $90mm face lift just a few years ago (and it wasn't too shabby prior to that) so it requires minimal upgrades at this point to be converted to a JW. I expect it to be a Cat 7 or 8 reward redemption when it is loaded into the system.

We shall not forget that the Essex House was a Marriott property between 1969 and 1985. The name then was Marriott's Essex House. Glad Marriott is back as the new manager of this NYC landmark hotel under their JW Marriott brand.

And it was a Starwood property in the 2000s, operating as a split between Westin and St Regis before is was sold to Dubai Investment Group and converted to a Jumeriah. It gets around. ;)

Don't forget it was owned by JAL between 1985 and 1999 and run under their Nikko brand. [ Interesting that Nikko seems worldwide in decline today ie. their Mexico City property is now a Hyatt Regency and the former Nikko Jakarta is today a Pullman hotel by Accor. ]

Under Starwood, the Essex House was also home to the Alain Ducasse @ the Essex House Restaurant. That went away when Jumeirah had taken over the hotel and changed the concept of their restaurant. The restaurant closed eventually in 2007.

Indeed, the Essex House has an amazing operator / owners history. I now only hope that the new owners and Marriott as the " returned " manager keep it much more stable than we've seen in their recent history.

The new owners have a 50 yr management agreement with Marriott so maybe things will be stable. Until its sold again anyway.
