We want to book an awards flight from New York to Barcelona in July 2013 as part of a Barcelona city and cruise trip. I have 120,000 miles from a Marriott Rewards Travel package and can also use some American Express points to add to it. We'd love to be able to fly business class and want a direct non-stop flight there but stops on the way home are ok. We belong to frequent flyer programs in all three alliances. Any suggestions about how to get started?

    Welcome to Milepoint Beachgirl11!
I believe the following airlines are your choices for a non-stop flight:

    American
    Delta
    United
    Air France
    Lufthansa

I.m not sure if Fares / Schedules have been published for July 2013. Usually done at -330 days. You may have to wait a few weeks to search for fares.

For New York to Barcelona, non-stop?

Yes, but I think AF is a code share operated by Delta.

I don't think LH and AF fly non-stop between NYC and Barcelona. There are presumably lots of code-shares on those flights that are in non-stop, but the "metal" choices are only going to be Delta, UA and AA as far as I know.

Now, when it comes to award programs, I am not sure there's much of a benefit in picking a codeshare partner program, but obviously there are lots of options.

I am not a Marriott fan/expert and have zero points in my account. But this page seems to show the transfer options for the 120,000 points:

    http://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morerew.mi

For instance, 125,000 Marriott points transfer into 50,000 Delta or UA miles. Are those 120,000 points in one account?

Without spending more than a few minutes thinking about this, I'd probably think the UA route with a couple Chase (Saphhire, Explorer) credit cards plus Marriott transfer would be one way to go.
