she finally sees the value in having status!

Our schedule is tight and would prefer a day trip or over night. Last weekend in December is open. Can leave either late Friday night or Saturday. We fly out of ORD.

Any thoughts? Sadly, most the other suggestions in the threads either don't apply or are too pricey. Looking to keep the MR below $400...

if we could get the 2012 leg to total greater than 2,900 miles, would love to have a little NYE vacation and return 1/1/13.

    thanks!

Sounds like you both would like to travel? 'Cause using elite maximizer to buy her up would likely be cheaper than 2 tix @ $400.

My short search of quick trip suspects that gets you the 2900 miles has little below $1000 per passenger between now and the 31st. Other members here are likely to be better at finding an appropriate destination for less than that.
At 28.3 cents/mile (the current cost I am seeing as a Platinum, yours may be lower) the elite maximizer will run you $820 (at exactly 2900 miles) or more.

Since it's the holiday season, you may not find any bargain price tickets. If you have enough miles, how about converting 30,000 miles for a 3000 PQM. I believe the link is: www.united.com/choices.Click the redeem now button under "Elevated Status." I was suppose to do a MR to Hawaii with my wife, but something came up. I guess silver will do for now.

Need to have a Chase UA Visa card, though, and 30,000 RDMs earned with that card. And I suspect you can only redeem them into your own account. But I have never actually had the need to try it.

OK, how about MKE-ORD-SLC (stay overnight)-DEN-MKE? With the 500-mile minimums, it's enough, but is over $900.
    From To Initial
    Heading Distance
    4 segment path: 2603 mi
    MKE (42°56'49"N 87°53'49"W) ORD (41°58'54"N 87°54'24"W) 180.4° (S) 67 mi
    ORD (41°58'54"N 87°54'24"W) SLC (40°47'18"N 111°58'40"W) 274.3° (W) 1250 mi
    SLC (40°47'18"N 111°58'40"W) DEN (39°51'42"N 104°40'23"W) 97.0° (E) 391 mi
    DEN (39°51'42"N 104°40'23"W) MKE (42°56'49"N 87°53'49"W) 70.8° (E) 896 mi

    Total: 2603 mi

WAIT! I may have your answer: ORD-MKE RT daily for 3 days running, or multiple times in one day. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy. 500 mile minimum times 6 legs is 3000, and you don't even have to add to the expense by going along with your wife. Fare of $180 available Fri, Sat, Sun and maybe Mon after Christmas.

On this kind of notice, that may be the best you can do.

ORD-DEN-PHX-IAH-ORD starting on the 28th return on the 29th 2930 miles $100 less than the maximizer price of $820.
ORD-IAH-CUN-ORD same dates $60 less than PHX above, over 3000 miles if you have your passport

love all of these ideas guys! you rock...sadly, I also have to balance her willingness to put up with an excessive MR. 3 r/t to MKE without me would certainly push her limits - but I like where your heads at!!

Might check into the ORD-DEN-PHX-IAH-ORD and see if we can do a night in IAH with family.

thanks again, and keep the ideas coming if you can! members of this site always impress me

I think it'd be more fun for her if I joined her...but you're right, there comes a point when financially it may make more sense to scrap the flight and just purchase the maximizer. We've got a flight to IAH in the next couple of days and the elite maximizer is quoting around $0.25 per mile for 4,000 PQMs which ain't cheap!

You probably don't want to use a 4000 mile maximizer at $0.25/mile if you only need 2900 miles. Find a route that would give you 2900 maximizer miles (or at least only slightly more) and then cancel the flight after buying the maximizer. You don't have to actually fly it or pay for the ticket to keep the maximizer miles.

You may be able to buy only half of the maximizer after you have flown to IAH. Between the ORD-IAH trips (I assume you are already counting that)and 2000 miles from the maximizer, you can find any short 500 mile minimum each way trip and get your cost down substantially.

Or buy the maximizer on the ORD-MKE. I would expect it would be for 2000 miles.

Might want to check for trips leaving out of MKE if that is an option. Also check with US airways. According to my weekly email from airfarewatchdog.com, it appears they are attacking DL and AA hubs right now. Good luck. :)

I realize this is kinda OT, but wow! I had no idea this perk existed! This could be a huge benefit to the UA Explorer card (in a pinch).

Last night, I saw Elite Maximizer for 15 cents for my husband with no status, and 22 cents for myself as a Gold.

You should be able to see it in your own future reservations. If you don't have any more booked, do you know the technique for booking, buying the Maximizer, and then canceling? How many miles will you need?

we saw the same (approx 22 cpm).

Just found an ORD-PHL-DFW / DFW-CLT-ORD flight on US Airways for $433 she might book. 3,500 miles at approx 12.4 cpm.

Thinking this might be the best option for her...we'll see. Might check United maximizer once more before making final decision. Also need to decide if $433 is worth the difference between silver and gold for her when I'm gold and the majority of her travel is with me.

ps - we cleared the upgrade list on the 787 IAH-ORD and are quite excited to experience the new plane upfront!!
