Not that vacationing in Missouri is thrilling but I just spent the past 9 days in various cities throughout MO - Joplin, Sedalia, Kansas City, St. Louis and in Kansas, Overland Park. Do you realize what these cities have in common...they were all hit by tornados of varying size and devastation within hours or days of my visit.

To make matters more curious, Minneapolis (my hometown) was also hit by a tornado, while I was gone. It originated and touched down about 4 blocks southwest of my home in St. Louis Park, skipped over and touched down again about 5 blocks northeast of my home.

Please know I'm not making light of the tragedy that struck so many lives, I'm just saying it's an eery feeling thinking about the coincidences and know how grateful I am to have missed it all.

I'm sure others have had near misses in their lives...anyone care to share?

I'm in Missouri myself right now, since Monday. I'm actually auditing a non-profit who has offices in Joplin and is working in the recovery effort. I'm staying in St. Louis though. It's been a rough period for weather through here. The non profit ended up closing up shop early yesterday as reports of tornadoes and severe storms started making their way into the St. Louis area.

I went to my hotel room and turned on the news for background noise while I freshened up. That's when I heard this on the TV: "Looks like we have some serious rotation starting to happen along the Mississippi River, right near downtown near the Casino Queen." I thought to myself, "That's odd, I can see the Casino Queen from my hotel room...."

I went over to my window and looked out toward the river 2 blocks away and saw this:

It's not the best quality since it was on my iPhone and also the lighting since it was storming/etc, but if you look carefully you can see a section of the clouds to the right of the Hyatt and next to the Arch is starting to decent toward the ground. I got nervous and started thinking about going to the basement but figured I'd not make it since I was 12 stories up, and a bathroom or stairwell was a better bet. The clouds rotated and dropped up and down in that area for another 2 minutes before finally moving off into IL where I heard they touched down and did some damage. Looking forward to getting out of this weather and home tomorrow!

We witnessed similar cloud formations during our drive from KC to SL but since I was driving I figured taking a picture was out of the question.

Happy to hear you are okay.
