I'm currently on UA 863 from JFK to SFO and requested my usual post-dinner coffee. What shows up? A mug. Gone is the cup and saucer, which I'm quite glad they are they were awful during any sort of turbulence.

P.S. finally also got a menu change and the chili is gone, that only took 8 months.

More changes. Good Grief now we're going to read about how the service items and food has gone downhill since Jeff took over. [IMG]

The coffee mug isn't really a new thing on UA, is it? I've had it for quite a while (and like it). Or was PS different?

There are times the saucer became a 'flying saucer', I like the mug move.

  6. Ugh, the low class mug. How pedestrian. Give me the cup and saucer back. More appropriate for a premium cabin, of course.

The mug was part of UA's catering standardization a couple years ago.

When CO scoffed at merging with UA the first time around, one of the reasons was UA's operational COmplexity was too much for CO to swallow. That's when UA started standardizing the china across meals.

Prior to that, UA used to have mugs in the morning, cups and saucers in the afternoons. Large cocktail glasses usually, but small ones if the flight was through catered. There were a number of COnfigurations.

    Depends what they do.

If they do things like eliminate UA's snack basket, UA's larger meals, or UA's tray linens and nut ramekins, then sure, we'll see COmplaints.

If they really do take best of both worlds (e.g., CO's transcon standards, UA's short- and mid-con standards and presentation standards), then I doubt we'll see COmplaints.

Heck, I'd be happy if CO brought back brewed decaf coffee, container not important.

To all the coffee afficianados: I know decaf is, as my sister calls it, hot brown water.

Good change - the old cups really weren't a sufficient serving size.

The mug has been around for a while. I'm a big fan for morning flights. The thimble (er, cup) wasn't really a reasonable amount of coffee.

The nut ramekins and table linens are good, but I'd prefer to dispense with UA's smaller trays and paper liners in favor of CO's linen-lined trays. I also much prefer CO's breakfasts, but the rest of UA's catering standards are adequate.

The mug came back awhile ago, and it was MUCH better than the saucer. Long live the mug. I used to have to ask for hot drinks in a paper cup because the saucer thing was so awful

Of course. Except when you place the mug in front of the sheer curtain, it becomes the first class mug. Of greater concern is who mugged the premium cabin catering and replaced it with something that Trader Joe's would be embarrassed to sell from its freezer aisle.

While I agree the mug on UA is nice, I was surprised that they went with what seems like such a standard color. Doesn't match the china like other airlines in my opinion.

I don’t have, or, at least, I don’t think I have, wide fingers, but I frequently find that my index finger just doesn’t work well with the small openings of a lot of the cups that have saucer accoutrements. I also prefer a mug for flights as I hate spilled coffee in the saucer that drips down from the cup‘s bottom as I raise it for a gulp. (Imprecise English, I know. I raise the cup right-side-up for the gulp. I didn’t mean that I turn the cup over to drink from the bottom of it.)
