I was in Munich in 2003 for a little over 48 hours.

One entire day & most of a night, was spent at Oktoberfest.

The other day I went to Andechs Monstary: www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/germany/andechs.htm

I also attempted to visit Dachau Concentration Camp but I didn't do my research well and it was closed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachau_concentration_camp

I remember walking through the old part of Munich, BMW museum and taking in the Rathaus-Glockenspiel in the Marienplatz.

For this upcoming trip, I plan to do all of the above (except Oktoberfest) as this time I'm going with Mrs Sweet Willie.

We've thought about renting a car and visiting Neuschwanstein and then perhaps the Alps town of Garmisch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuschwanstein_Castle

What other sights/activities should we consider while in Munich?

Replying in order to subscribe to this thread... I'm thinking of grabbing a BMW and choosing Euro Delivery sometime after winter (to avoid the mess of needing winter tires) so a trip out there (hopefully on an A380) is definitely something I'm planning.

Seeing as you are going in June, you'll most likely have better beer garden weather than when we go in late November !!

how about a day trip to Neuschwanstein and one of the villages in the Alps? or if you really feel 5 days is too many to spend in Munich, there is always a day trip to Salzburg which is ~80 minutes by train, lots of trains to choose from.

I was just there for a business trip in late September, my second time there with the first being way back in 1995. I managed to visit, among other places:

    - BMW Museum
    - Olympia Park and Tower
    - Allianz Arena
    - Centrum
    - Maximillian Strasse
    - Marien Platz
    - Augustiner Brauhaus
    - The German Museum of Science and Technology

The Science and Technology Museum was very interesting and definitely worth a visit. I have a few photos but can't post them since I have no access to them at the moment.

we are staying at the Holiday Inn city center for <100€ per night, I fully agree that we too will not be in the room much. I will have the Mrs with me, a nice gift with the $$ I'll save by not being in a 4-5* hotel will go a LONG way towards her not caring that we aren't in a higher * hotel, also some trips we jump around alot in order to maximize hotel promos/rates, we are staying put for the entire time we are in Munich so automatically I get Mrs bonus points for that !!
I'll write up a trip report when we return.

    Thanks for the photos cennas

In a day of digital magic, the Rathaus glockenspiel is a bit disappointing IMO.

The Deutsches museum is a fun place, and Dachau is a must-see, but highly depressing, place. Neuschwanstein is also well worth a visit, although you can get there by train and don't need to rent a car.
