I moved to Tokyo last year from LA. 2MM with UA so lifetime status and 1K for the year with current 38K EQM. Just status matched to AA with as EXP. Japan is very expensive as a base for MRs so was wondering if anybody has any advice on MRs on Star alliance carriers or AA. Would appreciate any help. Got some domestic flights on NH from HND to Osaka but that nets only a couple hundred miles each way.

Mileage running is pretty difficult in Japan. The best you can usually do is to get a cheap ticket to LAX or another convenient spot in the US, and do domestic MRs there.

There are some opportunities for cheap domestic segment running. Some Japanese geeks have come up with ways to pack in something like 10 domestic segments a day by flying to FUK or OKA and doing rapid round trips to nearby islands at something like 5,000 yen/segment.

I also understand that you can get relatively cheap premium class tickets ex-BKK/MNL to LAX, with the option to stop in NRT in either direction, which can be a comfortable and cost-effective way to rack up miles when flying transpac...
