The way Ads by Google changes the banner ads on this site based on my posts is getting creepy.

I started a post about checking into a local hotel for a mini mid-winter pool vacation earlier today, and all the ads I now see on the site are for Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas.

A few days ago, I posted about the Hilton website being down, and the ads all seemed to change to a Hilton banner ad about the Q1 promo.

I’m sure this happens on other websites as well and I’m only noticing because of how much time I’ve spent on Milepoint recently, but I have to say it does feel a bit stalker-ish now that I have noticed.

That would be standard. The ads are targeted to keywords. When you buy ad space, you bid on specific keywords for placement, and the ads are supposed to appear on pages with those words. The advertising systems were designed that way years ago.

It just indicates that Google is indexing this site. I'd be curious how this operates in the private forums (see the help file/status page - once you hit Silver you have access). Those are not supposed to be indexed by Google. I have ads blocked, so I can't check how it's working there.

Private Forum ads work the same.
Australia thread has ads for New Zealand
Coffee thread has ads for coffee
Luggage Tag thread has ads for leather luxury gifts

it may not be so Private...

I'm now really curious about what you've said in previous threads for Google's analysis of your posts to yield online dating ads [IMG]

This past week when I was staying at a HGI all the banner ads were from HGI! And I didn't post at all in the Hilton forum. It's like it knew where I was[IMG]

GOOGLE, get out of my head! [IMG]

I turned my Adblock off to see what I got and my ads are for Illy (just as I went for a sip of coffee!) how do they know?!?

Why are my ads never for -- "Fly free, because we Like you", or "have we found a mistake airfare for you - First on SQ for $1!" - a guy can dream, can't he! [IMG][IMG]

I believe it is indeed a 1 time qualification and per other discussions will not change once achieved even if the qualification levels change :)

Adblock Plus will do the trick, but I turned it off as I am intrigued as to what Google thinks I should be buying! I see I need a messenger bag, underwear and another Continental Chase card!

One that really bothers me is what gmail does. If you use gmail, look at the ads around the page when you display a piece of mail. They are targeted to keywords in the subject line.

For example, if I send a client an e-mail about gargoyles, and they use gmail, when they get my e-mail it will have ads for cheap knockoff gargoyles from China, or other products that compete with my work.

Seriously? That is very creepy! I never use Facebook chat, but I would have assumed it wasn't being invasively monitored like that.

Do you know if Google does the same thing with GChat? I think they do it with emails.

I use google ads on my golf site and it adjusts adds based on blog content. There is also the option to block specific ad content if one desires. You would not want the ads for find singles online to show up on your marriage and family blog.
