It’s time for Tropfest: Sydney’s ultimate short movie outdoor flicker fest.
Take a picnic and get into the annual showcase of Australia’s next big thing in movie making. John Polson started the festival as the Tropicana Short Film festival a casual screening for cast and crew at Darlo’s Tropicana café. Some twenty years later and film fans (about 150,000 of them) gather in the Domain in the Royal Botanic Gardens to see a line up of talented filmmakers showcase their short films under a huge screen with satellite connections to audiences in other Aussie capitals.
Tropfest is free to attend and most moviegoers bring a picnic and arrive early to find a spot with a great view amid a sea of rugs laid out on the grass. Sunshades and umbrellas are a must in case of inclement weather or to protect against the February rays.
Famous Aussie faces like Toni Collette, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman are among international movie stars who take part in judging the winners out of 16 finalists for the $100,000 prize pool.
Each short film is made for the festival and should include a Tropfest signature item. Light bulb is the theme for 2012.
