    http://www.discovercard.com/customer-service/account/cash-over.html

How do I get cash over?
Easy. Just use your Discover Card at checkout and choose how much cash you'd like.
Will I be charged a transaction fee for using cash over?
No! There is no fee for the transaction.
Is there a special interest rate applied?
Not at all- the same purchase APR apply, just like your other Discover Card purchases.
Is there a limit to how much cash I can get over my purchase?
Cash Over transactions cannot exceed $120 daily. Most stores have a cash over limit. Check with your local store.

I'm pretty sure that you can do this with any credit card at most grocery stores, though I haven't lived in the US for a few years now so I haven't had the pleasure of doing it recently.

Did you try it with Discover? How does it post? As a purchase?

It's been around for awhile. It posts as a purchase but the cashover part does not earn rewards.

Depends on how you buy them or what kind of gift cards. Store gift cards are pretty easy to get and earn points on, but of course you are limited to spending at a specific (or partner) store. I've heard you can get AMEX gift cards and offset the fee with extra mile earnings, but never tried it.

If you are talking retailer GCs, my favorite approach is to walk into Kroger or CVS (or other comparable grocery/corner pharmacy), buy online retailer GCs - I use Amazon.com a lot - and take the extra ~2% bonus in store or gas credit. Your CC never knows that you bought gift cards, so it posts as a grocery purchase.

Now, you can really juice the system if you can hit a bonus on either pharm. or grocery purchases. You should also be able to get the new US Airways/Hawaiian point bonus at Amazon.com when you use those gift cards.

Using this method, you could get a minimum ~5ish% rebate in miles and credit for Amazon.com purchases, depending on specifics.

There are other ways, of course, some of which would give you more miles and less cash back, but this is the simplest IMO.

Discover lets you send $500/per month via paypal for no charge [up to $200 a transaction]. While not huge, it does help to make spend for the various cashback promos.

    Cheers -

    Very interesting. I guess, I'm 20 years late :)
I started to look into it, since Discover sent me a targeted promo - spent $3k a month for 6 month, get $500 extra cashback. However, will be very interesting to know if any other cards have this option.

Discover was the first card, and to my knowledge, only card to offer this benefit. Prior to switching to more lucrative cards, I always took at least an extra $20 at the grocery store.

Thanks all for posting this. Last time I logged into my Discover account I saw this message, but as it's no longer one of my wallet cards, I didn't look into it. Looks good for the 5% grocery months, though.
