Does anyone know with any level of certainity if Alaska allows you to fly out on one carrier and come back on another?

Of course, with Star Alliance carriers, you can fly out on whoever you like and back on any other carrier. IE, I flew PHX-EWR on CO, EWR to ZRH to FCO on Swiss, then came back Lufthansa from ATH to FRA to MCO and US back to PHX.

    Thanks for your help!

My understanding is that you are locked into one.

This is correct, with the exception that you can also fly AS. For example you can't fly BA & AA, but you can fly BA & AS. You can also fly AF & KLM on one award ticket, since they're considered one airline.
