For a San Francisco foodie, it's surprisingly hard to find top-notch gourmet food in Hawaii, especially food which uses sustainably-caught local fish and locally-grown vegetables and meats. Much of the ranch land you see on the Big Island is used to raise cows for consumption in Canada and the mainland: the best meat is hard to find locally.

The best food we found, hands-down, was at Merriman's on the Big Island. Fresh, seasonal, and well-seasoned. Lots of vegetables, and with a strong emphasis on local producers. Few other places we visited even came close to achieving this kind of cuisine.

We also ate at their Kauai location, but found the Big Island one to be consistently better... still, any of their locations is better than most overpriced fare on the islands.

Merriman's Market restaurant in King's Shop at Waikoloa is also really great. Fresh / local, and a steal with happy hour 3 to 5:30 cheap drinks and really tasty appetizers on sale.
