Well, I suspect most folks won't actually redeem on Alaska. Award availability is pretty darn good around the West Coast and for the Seattle midcons (ATL/ORD/DFW/IAH). Not so good for, say, the DCA/BOS/EWR flights. But it's a great way for DL flyers in ATL, say, to get around and out to a West Coast gateway for transpacific flights. [Personally I think any ATL-based flyer looking for a couple of premium cabin tickets to Hawaii ought to just get an Alaska Visa and just buy the F fare with $99 companion).

But the real value in AS miles is their unique partnerships across alliances. Access to BA awards meals that an Alaska segment to a gateway city + BA means you can almost always get to Europe in a premium cabin, if you're willing to pay a fuel surcharge.

And those Cathay Pacific Awards, oooooh... I mean 140k in F for CX to South Africa with Hong Kong stopover. Wow! And excellent availability, especially ex-SFO.

Lots of great options. Only downside is inability to combine partners on a single award. It's one partner only, or AS + one partner. I do like that Alaska allows Board Room access when flying F on an award...
