A Maui Air charter flight crashed last night around 9 p.m. after taking off from the Lanai airport, killing 3 and seriously injuring 3 people.

The crash occurred about a mile from the airport. The pilot was one of those killed. According to the Maui Air website, the company flies twin-engine, 10 seat, Piper Chieftain airplanes.

This is the second fatal commuter plane crash in Hawaii in three months. In December, a Makani Kai Air Cessna Grand Caravan crashed after take off from the Kalaupapa airport on Molokai, killing one person.
