A small plane crashed into a tree close to the Marshfield Municipal Airport-Harlow Field Friday afternoon, injuring the pilot and sparking a fire, officials said.

The incident, which involved a Maule M-5 general aviation aircraft, happened at about 3:45 p.m. The single-engine plane had just left the airport and was returning to make a landing, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

“Yes, we had an aircraft incident,” said a representative of Shoreline Aviation Inc., which operates the airport.

He said the aircraft had only the pilot on board. The pilot sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was transported to South Shore Hospital, the Shoreline Aviation official said.

The crash also caused a small fire, he said. The FAA said it would investigate the incident.
