The Marriott Biscayne Bay was probably a very nice hotel when it opened, but has fallen behind a bit. There are a few hotels in the Biscayne Bay area and those around Brickell are typically newer and better kept.

That being said, for the right price, happy to go back as the staff was good and the hotel was adequate.

Quick Review: JW Marriott Brickell (Miami area)

Checkin:The staff was very welcoming and very apologetic that they did not have my bed type (as they were sold out).

Status/Upgrade: Acknowledge my status, provided internet username and password, but no real upgrade. We were assigned a standard room on the "concierge floor" but not actually the floor with the concierge lounge.

Location: Along Brickell a few blocks north of the Conrad and a few blocks form the Miami Metrorail.

Parking: On-site, check the website for costs.

Hotel/Building: Building still seems very new and upscale (built in 2000).

Amenities: Gym, pool and fast WiFi (required username and password)

Room: The first thing that I noticed was the very musty smell in the room. Although the room is on a concierge floor (not THE concierge floor) it seems like a standard room. The room also has a desktop computer on the desk that does not work. A TV was integrated into the bathroom mirror.

Body Care: Aromatherapy Associates - Bath Soap Bar, Hand Soap Bar, BodyWash, Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Lotion, Kleenex, Bath Robe (singular)

Hotel Staff: The staff was very courteous and professional.

Breakfast/Dining/Lounge/Club: This has to be one of the best domestic Marriott lounges that I have visited. The lounge is reasonably spaced with computers for internet access and a printer. The lounge is open 24/7 with access to drinks, juices and snacks and the Lounge staff is very polite and helpful.

Summary: Nice hotel and staff, the lounge is probably the best perk of the hotel followed by the helpful staff. The hotel does not seem to have a lot of non-suite room types so do not expect an upgrade unless there is low occupancy.

I recently stayed at the Miami Marriott Dadeland, which was quite a lot cheaper than anything closer in. It's very convenient, since it is essentially adjacent to a Metro rail station. I thought it was one of the nicest Marriotts I've stayed at in a long time. I was particularly impressed by the in-room internet terminal (even though I had my tablet with me), which is something I haven't seen in a hotel in the U.S. before.

Is the terminal only for the internet? We had something like that in our room at the JW Brickell, but it did not work so I was not sure what software/access was available.

I don't know. I only used it for checking my email, (because, frankly, I have better things to do when I'm traveling than killing time on-line) but it looked identical to the set-up that they had in the business center. I assume one could print to the business center.

    South Beach Marriott

Location: Southern park of Ocean Drive just south of the Ocean Beach Park (which has a playground) and just north of the Hilton Bentley

Parking: On-site, check the website for costs.

Hotel/Building: One Building which runs East-West so the narrow end is toward the ocean

Rooms: Only the East-end rooms are oceanfront, although those on the side have an angled balcony to be particular ocean views. There is a building to the south which blocks part of the view and sun. There is not a building to the north, but that's not where the sun is.

Breakfast/Dining/Lounge/Club: The lounge is on the West end of the building so it has a "city view" rather than any water views. There are three decks - one each west, north and south, the outside areas combined are about as large as the interior lounge space.
