Quick Review: Renaissance ClubSport Aliso Viejo (SoCal area)

Checkin: We arrived very late and the front desk was very friendly and polite. She even read the comments in the reservation and honored our request. She also lightly covered the resort amenities.

Status/Upgrade: Recognized status and upgraded to Jr. Suite. Not really a suite but actually just a very, very large room. Standard Platinum amenity choices. Breakfast buffet 7-days a week (no lounge). WiFi is free for everyone so not a status-specific perk.

Location: It is right off the 73 toll road (or up Laguna Canyon Road/El Toro Rd if you want to avoid the toll) in a business complex (Pacific Life, Microsemi, Bausch + Lomb, etc). LA is a driving city, so although this is not a location I was looking to stay it is pretty easy to take the Toll north or Laguna Canyon Road/El Toro Rd to Laguna.

Parking: No street parking (companies have private lots/garages and the private residences are gated communities). The hotel has parking is $10/day self-park or valet for $20/day.

Hotel/Building: Built under 5 years ago (2008) and modeled after the Walnut Creek location (SF area). Hotel is very clean and well lit, granny smith apples and water near the elevator bank.

Amenities: This is probably why most people are here. Use of the ClubSport is included as well as some classes (yoga = gratis, pilates = payment). Two pools - one family and lap-pool (not Olympic size but has lanes), basketball court, squash courts, full gym, locker rooms. There is a nice bar area with both inside and outside seating (outside fire pits). WiFi seems free to everyone.

Room: Very well kept, nicely furnished. Included small dumbbell weights, bar soap (no bath gel), conditioner, shampoo. The lights had motion detectors so they turned on – need during the day, but bad during when going to the bathroom at 2am (bad on your eyes as well as on your significant other in the room).

Body Care: Aveda - Soap Bars (same for hand and bath), Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Lotion. (BodyWash in locker room but not hotel rooms), Bath Robe, Dedicated Makeup area (Table, Stool, and Mirror specific for Makeup)

Hotel Staff: Great. The staff is courteous, efficient and knowledgeable. They have lots of energy and upbeat.

Breakfast/Dining/Lounge/Club: No lounge at this location. The breakfast buffet includes: fruit (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple), yogurt, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, potatoes, made-to-order omelets and a variety of cereals/milk. The bill showed just $6/person before it was scratched out for "elite" so even if you do not have status this seems very reasonably priced. They also have a breakfast menu but that's at an additional cost. No Lounge.

Summary: The hotel is nice, the classes are great and glad we went a little out-of-the-way to stay here and definitely would come back. Oh, and this is a Cat 5 that's not moving up to a Cat 6 for those looking for a good place to use your Visa certificate.

Quick Review: Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel (SoCal area)

Checkin: Very, very busy but they had our room ready and handed us a packet with key inside. Quick and easy, although they did not mention, and I did not ask about, the amenities which are part of a mandatory resort fee.

Status/Upgrade: Recognized status and upgraded to full Suite. Unfortunately all rooms with a view (of any size) were sold out (which I confirmed online) otherwise I think they would have upgraded accordingly.

Location: Right over top of Salt Creek Beach Park off of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH/SR-1). Great views including occasion whale sightings.

Parking: Valet-only at $35/night. Since it is per-night there are in-and-out privileges. There is also one-hour street parking, or $1/hour parking at the Park, but parking is not allowed in the Park between midnight & 5am.

Hotel/Building: The hotel is quite large but very well maintained. I was amazed to hear it was 29 years old (1984) as it seems every bit as new as the Park Hyatt Aviara (former Four Seasons) and St Regis Monarch Beach.

Amenities: Beach Butler (includes towels, water, chairs, umbrella), Daily Yoga and Pilates, tennis courts & rackets, eco-tour. Note that these are identified as part of the mandatory $25/night Resort Fee. On-property the only indication that these amentias existed were the beach butler cards by the pool, so you should be proactive in asking about amenities/services provided by the hotel.

Room: Very well kept, nicely furnished. The room was amazing including a long outside terrace (one entrance from the living area and one from the bedroom). The master bathroom was very large with two sets of sinks although the combined shower/bathtub was a bit cramped.

Body Care: Asprey Purple Water - Bath Soap Bar, Hand Soap Bar, Body Wash, Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Lotion, Mouth Wash, Q-tips, Facial Pads, Kleenex, Bath Robes, Slippers, Shoe Polisher, Shoe Mitt, Shoe Horn, Sowing Kit, Water, Keurig Machine & Green Mountain Coffee K-Cups, Teas, Dedicated Makeup area (Desk, Stool, and Mirror specific for Makeup)

Hotel Staff: Great. Very friendly, genuinely seemed interested in making sure you had a wonderful stay. The yoga/pilates instructor gave people personal attention and even recommended taking photos in yoga position with the ocean behind. Literally, the only possible constructive feedback is that they could be proactive about informing guest of hotel amenities/services (I received a letter on arrival, and that letter did not mention any of the above amenities/services).

Breakfast/Dining/Lounge/Club: Early Sunday morning they have an abbreviated breakfast menu as later they serve a Champaign brunch. The club seems small, but there were always some tables available. The Club a various assortment of non-alcoholic drinks available 24/7, Honest Tea, Sole Water (sin & con gas), sodas, etc.

Summary: Amazing hotel, staff, service. The only possible complaints are that I had to eventually checkout and breaking a mandatory resort fee out from the basic room rate. Now if MegaBonus would only include a free Tier 3 night ;-)
