Does anyone share my thoughts that the Marriott phone rep's are vastly
under trained? I am relatively new to Marriott (1yr) and on several
occasions I have asked various questions of the desk rep's and get
a different answer from as many as three people. Quit amazing imho.

I love Amex and have for many years and I also find Hilton to be
the best and most knowledgeable staff of the various hotel reward
programs. Guess my days with Marriott are limited.

I think it is the luck of the draw, as I have had good and bad with both

Sometimes a chain's Elite lines will get the more experienced reps. If you have status with only one that might explain some of the difference. I almost never have to call so I can't speak from experience too much.

My experience with them is pretty ok. I think macwint55 is right. There are hundreds of people working there and you might had somebody in training. Everybody needs to learn sometime!

I was HH Diamond for years but since 2010 have been MR Gold. I left Hilton because I had too many poor CS experiences, they really made me feel like I was unimportant as a (Diamond) customer. It's a shame as I prefer Hilton properties over Marriott. Marriott has really taken care of me though. Web and email I've had mixed results but phone is always a home run. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I guess in this case YMMV.

I've been a Hilton member for years, first Diamond and now Gold. I switched to Marriott a year ago and have bee. Gold for 6 months. So far I am not impressed. It is significantly easier to get status with Hilton, and one you have status I think Hilton takes care of you much better. More upgrades, free breakfast, significantly more hotels with an executive lounge.

Perfect example, Its been on they blogs recently that Marriott is about to start offering free breakfast to members with gold and platinum status. I mean really? They are just now getting around to offering free breakfast to gold members??

Well, they offered lounge access to Gold since long ago, and that included free breakfast in the lounges and evening snacks as well.

Their new offering means more in the way of breakfast when the lounges are closed, or in the properties without lounges. It's not the first time Gold has gotten free breakfast.

I'm HHonors Gold and MR Silver (gold prior to this year). I have had consistently good CS from Hilton, and fairly consistently good with Marriott. I have been finding this year, though, that Hilton properties have been less expensive than comparable Marriott properties. In past years, it was the opposite in my experience.

I've had bad experiences with both but Hilton points are so devalued to me that I trend toward Marriott more.

I have both of these cc and Ive never asked the hotel staff about their points, but I can say the best deal is to do a partial pay plus use miles, your miles will go farther this way. I believe the Marriott cc takes less points for free nights.

It is definitely easier to qualify for status with Hilton.

But I find Marriott properties more consistent, in general, and even though the advertised benefits are lower, I often get extras from Marriott (e.g. wine and chocolate awaiting me in the room).

In general, I lean towards booking properties based on convenience to where I am going and I spend very little time in hotel rooms other than when I sleep, so my priorities may not match yours.

It is real easy to get gold with hilton......just get the right credit card and enjoy the gold level benifits right away.
