It is not really a free night, just a night counting towards status.

My wife received e-mail today from MR saying that everyone likes surprises, after clicking on it it was one night counting towards Elite status. She is MR Gold. I am Ritz Carlton Gold, also had birthday and received no such surprise gift. It's not much but at least a nice creative gesture on MR part as the 50 nights requirement is SOOO high compared to other chains.

Marriott has been doing this for a few years, if, and only if, your birthday is listed in your profile. I don't know if they do this if your only affiliation is Ritz Carlton Rewards though.

Last birthday Marriott emailed me as usual, I clicked on the link and was told my night would be credited within a day or so. It never was. I inquired and was told they are having issues and the extra night will not show up anywhere but they assured me I had been credited. I didn't, and still don't believe it, but since it didn't make a difference in final status I let it go. I probably should have followed up again.

I have only received the "gift" once (last year).

I only received one this year. Is it status-dependent?

I got it this year, last year, and I think the year before (all as Platinum).

IDK, but I don't remember receiving one last year when I was Platinum.

Somewhere around the first or second quarter of 2013 they temporarily stopped issuing the "gift" but then started it up again around June. On their discussion boards they asked anyone who was skipped to contact them for their one night credit. Why they didn't just go back and credit anyone they missed I don't know, but sounds like they were having all sorts of technical difficulties with this throughout last year... which is kind of funny seeing how it used to work fine.

if MR could consider lower the criteria to achieve Gold and Platinum status would be great too, instead of a free night !;)

I received the email last year for the extra night credit, but they never did apply it. I didn't really worry as I'm a LT Plat and don't need night credits any longer. :)

I received my first gift this year, and this is also my first year as Silver. Didnt have status with them before, and no gift received before. But a very nice gesture.

The free night counts toward lifetime status as well, though.

Or did you mean dropping the criteria by more than one night? :D

What categories are these birthday presents typically good for?

It's not an e-certificate for a free night's lodging (like the one you get with your Marriott Rewards VISA every year), it's simply a +1 added to the number of nights they show you've stayed for that year (toward the 50 needed for Gold elite status or the 75 needed for Platinum). It's similar to the +1 night credit you get every time you charge a cumulative total of $3000 to the Marriott Rewards black VISA card.

I began my work/travel in mid February this year and it was my rollover nights and that one night that jumped me from Gold to Plat this year without spending a night in a hotel yet.
