Marriott loses control of hip Edition Waikiki hotel:confused:

Did you have plans to stay at the Waikiki Edition in Hawaii to see Marriott and boutique hotel pioneer Ian Schrager's trendy creation?

Guess again. The Wall Street Journal has an interesting scoop this morning about how - in the middle of the night - the luxury hotel's owners dramatically installed new management, changed the locks on the door, and even changed the hotel's name and signs. And they did it despite having a 30-year management contract with the Edition brand, the story says.

So where does this legal dispute leave travelers? And what does this mean for Marriott customers who have reservations at Edition, especially if they had used Marriott Rewards loyalty points to pay for their stay? Right now, we'll have to wait and see.

According to the Journal, the hotel's now called the Modern Honolulu. It's managed by Waikiki-based Aqua Hotels and Resorts, which operates mostly less expensive hotels such as the Aqua Aloha Surf Waikiki (about $69 a night and up).

The situation is sure to confuse customers, especially since as of today there are now dueling websites for the Edition Waikiki/Modern Honolulu.

Certainly a bizarre situation to go to bed in a Marriott and wake in an Aqua property.

My guess is 99% of the customers never even noticed.

A colleague of mine is postive he stayed in July at the Four Seasons Pierre in New York (even though it has been TAJ for ~2 years). When showing the TAJ website, the reply was, "Well TAJ is part of Four Seasons...". We who watch brands so close are in the distinct minority.

Big points... imagine that you're there a week and don't earn any Marriott credits because of this, or you have an old booking and all of the sudden you get no status / perks when you show up.

I personally looked at the hotel earlier for a vacation I have planned for late January but it wasn't as appealing as the other properties. The Hilton next door seems much nicer and the rates are comparable, and if you continue down the beach you have a ton of nice properties on nicer areas IMO.
