Marriott currently is running a promotion for some of its Hawaii hotels.
You can earn either Marriott Rewards points or United Mileage Plus miles.

Assuming you use your Marriott Rewards VISA it's 10 pts/$

    Promotions are :

    4+ nights : $100 at-hotel credit + Marriott rewards points

    4 nights : $50 at-hotel credit + 10,000 United Mileage Plus miles
    5+ nights : $50 at-hotel credit + 15,000 United Mileage Plus miles

    Room rate is the same for either promotion = $161 + $25 resort fee + $25 taxes/fees

    Question is what's a better deal ? 4 nights or 5 nights ? points or miles ?

    ** 5 nights **

    total base spend = 5 * $211 = $1055

    points promotion = $100 + (1055 * 10) = 10550 points

    miles promotion = $50 + 15K miles

    ** 4 nights **

    total base spend = 4 * $211 = $844

    points promotion = $100 + (844 * 10) = 8440 points

    miles promotion = $50 + 10K miles

Do you have a goal or plan for either your Marriott points or your United miles?

Not a specific goal/plan, but I fly United and stay in Marriott hotels at least once per year, and typically more than that ....

I'm trying to figure out what is the best deal. What is $ value of a Marriott Rewards point and a United Mileage Plus mile ?

Well, I think you can google and get lots of answers to that, but I like to use a simple metric for United miles: 25,000 miles would get me a RT transcon worth, say, $500. Of course, I like to use 100,000 at a time and get way more than $2000 out of them, but that's sort of a rough guide. At that value, they're worth 2 cents each. So, if you can't get 2 cents out of them, you're not doing it right. ;-)
Marritt...well, I defer to the experts, as I'm a Hyatt and Starwood gal myself.
But, if Marriott is like the ones I play more with, resort fees, taxes, parking, etc. won't earn you any points. (Except for the credit card spend ones.)
