Adam Hamid, who was caught with 4 kg of gold - worth Rs1.04 crore - on Friday, had made three successful attempts earlier. In each of these attempts, he smuggled 2kg gold. Emboldened by his
success, Hamid doubled the quantity only to and in the Customs net. Thirty-year-old Hamid was
    caught at
the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on arrival from Dubai on Friday. The 500 gold chains, weighing 4 kg, were found concealed in kneecap tied over his underwear. The ‘package’ was buried under two more pieces of underwear. His strange walking style gave him away.

During interrogation, Hamid revealed his previous successful attempts, the last of which took place on August 6. “He went to Dubai in the morning and returned the same evening,” said an official from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU).

Hamid revealed that one Razzak used to hand over the gold to him in Dubai and a driver by named Mohammed used to pick him up outside the Mumbai airport and collect the gold.

However, on Friday, Mohammed sensed trouble and did not show up at to the airport.

Customs authorities could slap the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) on Hamid, which would not allow him bail for a year.

“This is a fit case for COFEPOSA. There was clear intention of smuggling as the gold was concealed on the body,” the official said.

He added that Hamid’s confession of previous attempts also makes a stronger case for COFEPOSA.

Police hope that Hamid’s trial under COFEPOSA will send out a strong message to other smugglers. “With gold prices rising just before the festive and wedding season, we suspect more such attempts by other smugglers,” the official said.
