A Utah man charged with viewing child pornography on a Boston-bound commercial flight won't have to serve his jail sentence if he sticks to the terms of his probation.

Prosecutors say 50-year-old Salt Lake City resident Grant Smith pleaded guilty Thursday to possessing child pornography.

A Boston judge suspended Smith's 2 1/2-year sentence and placed him on five years' probation.
Smith must continue sex offender treatment, comply with Utah sex offender registry requirements and follow restrictions on contact with children and Internet use.

Prosecutors say a fellow first-class passenger saw Smith viewing pornographic computer images of young girls during a November 2011 flight. The passenger took a cellphone photo of the images and alerted a flight attendant.

Besides the fact it was child porn. If you cannot get on a plane for a few hours and NOT look at porn you really need to think about things.

I'd expect a place like Utah to go all Warren Jeffs on his a$$ and lock him up for life. Too bad they didn't. Disturbing indeed.

Judges don't usually turn down plea agreements, but if you were ever going to do it, you'd think it would be a case like this.

He was on a flight to Boston & was arrested upon landing, so this was a Massachusetts court, but your last 2 sentences are right on the money.

Didn't the person who took a cell phone photo of the child pornography also possess child pornography?

I guess that's part of the problem. Still disgusting. I'm sure the creep probably had it on his computer at home too. Too bad he didn't get busted for that also.

I think that's a little bit different, as it's pretty clear he used it as proof of what the original sleazeball was doing in case he turned his computer off.

I actually find that quite believable.

Did I miss something or did 2 passengers store child pornography and view porn?
"The passenger took a cellphone photo of the images and alerted a flight attendant."

    I'd arrest both passengers!

Child porn as in 17 year olds? =P

if it truly was young young... yeah, the guy needs help... but in all seriousness, we need to focus on reserving jail space for violent criminals, not people screwed in the head.

Whoops, I misread. I thought you & TravelBear were referring to the guy in the court case.:oops::oops: In that case, you're right. He shouldn't go to hell for watching porn (if he did, he could probably save me a place :D), but you sure as hell shouldn't be watching that kind of thing in public.

  22. far less unhealthy, and mitigates the extraordinarily damaging exploitation that goes on that feeds that industry, given this site is predominately men and obviously internet participants it may be interesting to see if there is any interest in getting a group together to lobby the govt and ISPs and actually get them to do more to be more proactive at getting the illegal stuff off the www, it concerns me everyday what my kids may see online, even as a result of innocent searches:eek::mad:

  23. have you ever heard what Ted Bundy had to say about the effect pornography had on him:eek:
