..at 6 AM on Feb. 3.

A long message in Hungarian on Malev's website says the board determined continued operations were untenable.

That's a real shame. Hungary has very serious problems, about a million home owners have mortgages nearing or in foreclosure. A large portion of those mortgages are denominated in Swiss Franc's, but the homeowners salaries are in Hungarian Forint, so devaluation/inflation has been devastating for them.

Which makes me wonder if the 2013 Deaflympics (Deaf Olympics) will even be actually held in Hungary mhmm...

I had the misfortune of flying them twice. My experience may have been atypical, but it was the same both times - long delays, seemed extremely disorganized, service was Soviet-grade, not a professional airline. Figured it either wouldn't last, or would be purchased by someone who knew what he was doing in the Western world.

I will say the people (employees), particularly on the planes as contrasted to gate staff, were friendly, helpful, and otherwise great. I hope they find jobs where they are appreciated.

I just posted this in the Malev out of business thread in other European airlines, but if it helps anyone, airberlin is offering free four month status matches to Malev elites. For details, go to airberlin.com/dunaclub. This presumably means oneworld status after March 20, 2012.
