Not personally, but MAS is a highly rated airline - 5 stars on skytrax.

This is great news for OW!

Some fun and interesting places Malaysia (MH) will bring to the table or add options to:
    • Maldives
    • South Africa (CPT & JNB)
    • Siem Reap (Angkor Wat)
    • Australia and New Zealand (PER, ADL, BNE, SYD, MEL, AKL)

I wish they joined 12-18 months ago as I am planning a trip to Langkawi now!

This is great news. Always happy when I find another reason to remain with OW. I like that MLE will finally be back on the table. Now if I could only figure out how to afford to stay there... :D

With RJ, IT, MH, CX, and JL, OneWorld's coverage of Asia will become quite good and geographically well-distributed. Wish they could pick up a couple of members in Africa next. :)

I'd settle for a member who would get me to Africa without going through London or the cut rate earning of IB in Madrid.

I have flown MH many times, I was Silver on their Enrich program for a while. The service is very good, the C product on 777, and 744 is angled similar to AA, but the pitch is extremely generous. It was a great option for me when they had the EWR-ARN-KUL flights. The lounges at KUL are pretty good, except they did not have showers, I was flying F to SYD after coming from the US and had to pay for a lounge with a shower. Overall this is a great addition to Oneworld.

BA flies to MLE from LGW, but if you're talking about fuel surcharges for award redemption, MH will hopefully reduce some of that!

I'd vote for a Chinese partner from a business stand point but personally I'm eager for an Africa partner, too. Realistically I'm not sure there is an unaligned airline in Africa that I'd want to see join OW yet though. Perhaps it's an inappropriate pun, but OW might need to "poach" an Africa partner from *A or ST....

With ideas like this I may never go back to work. That would be a nice routing from NYC. I like this.

I have flown MH several times recently. They are not the best, IMO, but they are a great addition for OW without a doubt. Happy day!

I posted this on another thread last week:

I'm interested in award travel to make a southern hemisphere RTW tour of the rugby power countries, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Argentina, but I'm having trouble finding OneWorld flights spanning South America and Africa without routing through Europe.
In my research I've found that LAN codeshares with South African, but I'm not sure if award travel would allow that flight, since SA is a *A member. Does anyone know if this is the case? It seems OneWorld makes it "difficult" to get from South America to Africa.

It's like the heavens opened up and answer my question. Thank you Malaysian airlines!

No. You cannot get an award ticket on a LA codeshare of and SA metal flight.

Sadly, as millionmiler mentions, you can't book that codeshare. Also, OW doesn't have direct flights between South America and Africa at all, so it's actually not "difficult", it's impossible. ;)

At least till MH becomes official that is.

Which is why, for me, this announcement is so exciting with the MH Buenos Aires to Cape Town segment. A southern hemisphere RTW trip FTW!

It really does speak to OW's weakness in Africa. MH's inclusion puts a small patch on it, but really it's not a fix at all. And if LAN ends up leaving OW? Hm.

I took this flight about 7 years ago in F using DL miles (was I believe 75k miles) and MH was a DL partner.
Excellent flight thought the service etc was almost as good as CX F.

This and the SA (South African airways) flight GRU/CPT are the hidden gems of getting to SA from NA without tramping through Europe and the hell-hole of LHR.

For us in South Florida it means just two 8 hour flights. MIA/EZE then EZE/CPT or GRU/JNB with same day arrival/departure sure beats the hell out of going through LHR or AMS where the flight times are more like 9 hours/overnight/14 hours on to SA.

Didn't realize we were expecting LAN to move on. At least AA still would connect in EZE to MH. But would not be good to lose another member.

Any suggestion that OW is losing LAN belongs in the " wildly unsubstantiated AA rumors" thread.
The whole speculation is based solely on the TAM/LAN merger and that airlines' current affiliation with Star.
If the LAN move was even considered why would they even go though the move and considerable infrastructure costs involved at MIA??

Funny we never hear the rumor "TAM is moving to OW"
