Luggage and Travel Gear?

Discussion in 'Travel Technology' started by FlyMeAway, Feb 9, 2011.  |  Print Topic

  1. Should there be a separate sub-forum for luggage and other travel gear that isn't necessarily "technological", per se?

Maybe the "Travel Technology" forum should be "Travel Gear" with several other sub-forums? Or perhaps there's another solution?

I like the idea of a separate Travel Gear forum (or subforum). I'm always interested in getting others' takes on travel products that you wouldn't normally consider technology.

Full agree on a separate thread for this. Under the Travel Gear heading it can cover a wider range of topics such as carry on bags, checked luggage, backpacks and such....

I agree. I have received invaluable information from fellow travelers regarding items such as luggage and clothing. While I do enjoy new tech trends and ingenius gadgets, many of our most annoying inconviences have been fixed through low tech solutions. Unfortunately many of these non-tech topics tend to elicit infrequent posts due mostly to lengthy product lfe-cycles and slowly released innovations. Its easy to lose these threads in the sea of constantly emerging tech gadgets and electronic treats.

I'm looking for a bag that comfortably holds a week's clothing, fits in an overhead bin, weighs about 8 ounces, and is stylish. :D

I was going to recommend a large garbage bag with elastic ties, which may sneak in under your weight requirement, but I don't think they have been fashionable for awhile. Plus, it takes more than a little "finesse" to wedge it in an overhead bin.

Agree with the OP's suggestion, a travel products forum would be great.

I need one of those Harry Potter bags or a scale (yet working) model of a Tardis.

I agree that a travel gear forum would be great! I'd like to see a forum with threads each containing user testimonials about different carry-ons. It would come in handy when it's time for a change!

I recently trawled through FT on a rollaboard testimonial hunt.

The noise to signal ratio was high; search was ineffective in my hands.

The needles in that haymountain were for Briggs and Riley, mostly for the outstanding warranty.

I'm now the proud owner of one, which has done over 20,000 miles with me in the past fortnight.

+1 I'd love to see a forum for travel gear as I'm currently in the market for a new rollaboard, but I'm finding it difficult to find some quality reviews.

For anyone who travels with a backpack and dislikes the dangling straps, I found an elegant solution with a product called Web Dominator (about $3) and easily found with a Google / Bing search.

Here is a video of them in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jWBSPq87zM

Less expensive solutions are electrical / duct tape. But for the low price of the Web Dominator, I now have a clean yet flexible solution.

Yes, count me in on this one! (and I also bought a briggs &riley after reading all those recommendations--the transcend 20 inch wide expandable. Love it, and hope I'll never need the warranty!)

Maybe go down the sub forum rute when there are more threads? I know it will be a pain for somebody to move the original ones though

+1 on this one. I would not mind a few ideas, with me it is pretty much hit and miss with luggage. I usually like something until something else comes along.
