Most insurance companies are being very, very proactive. What's your homeowner's insurance company's stance on getting you some initial assistance?

Why take full insurance from the company if you're already insured, especially if you have a credit card that will act as secondary (or sometimes even primary) coverage?

Check with your insurance agent and any car body shops in your area, they should be able to get you some leads on where to rent a car at special rates including possibly car dealerships.

For normal car rental coupons, I recommend the Entertainment discount books which you can order on line.

If you really need primary coverage, and are an AmEx cardholder, you can get their Premium Car Rental Coverage for $24.95, PER RENTAL PERIOD UP TO 42 DAYS. (Rather than per day, as the rental car company will charge you.) You don't have to pay in advance. Just enroll your cards, and any rental paid for with your AmEx after enrollment should be covered. You will be charged the $24.95 on any rental using your AmEx after that, so make sure to remember that or use a different card later if you don't want coverage, but it's a decent idea to have in your hip pocket. https://www295.americanexpress.com/premium/car-rental-insurance-coverage/home.do

I believe this, though, does not have the liability coverage you may need, but you may have that through other insurance you carry.

    So sorry about your loss.
Agree with others that you should be able to get a good monthly rate. You may want to rent from a neighborhood location, rather than airport, because neighborhood locations often don't have to pay the airport concession and facility fees. Also check with Enterprise and maybe even local car dealers.

My sister in law and brother in law are in the same boat. Their first floor apartment was flooded and they lost 3 cars.

FEMA was already on-site and supposedly they will get some assistance in 2 weeks. In the meantime, it was a trip to Target / Walmart / wherever to grab some emergency stuff and they're staying with friends/family.

My sister-in-law is renting with Enterprise and they are footing the bill. She had to leave a credit card for a deposit, but otherwise everything else is being covered by the insurance. Granted I don't think you earn points (GAH!) but considering the circumstances, it might be an option to consider -- rather than renting from say Budget/Avis and having to foot the bill yourself then be reimbursed.

Also check with the FEMA people. I would expect that they have special rates thru FEMA just for cases like this. I mean, this is a case of a really distressed traveler, and I would imagine that FEMA has an option available.

FEMA is really good at what they do. And they say you would get an answer within 15 minutes.
I also suspect that the Car Rental Companies are moving vehicles to the Mid Atlantic Region at speed and quantity from places like Cinncinnati, Louisville, Atlanta, etc. And for people wanting to rent in those areas, your first choice may not be available.

Very sorry to hear of your situation. The following thread in the Hertz forum offers an economy/compact car for $499/month or a mid-size SUV for $599/month. They seem to be sold out in LGA/JFK. I see them available in PHL. Maybe some other searches can find them somewhere closer.
Hertz 1-month SUV rental for $599 + tax (return by 1/31/13)

While the link on that page no longer goes to its details, the RQ code still works where available.

I've often found very inexpensive rental car companies that are local, not chains, and rent older cars, using the Yellow pages (I know, right!) and Google searches, but the latter is actually harder. Also, if you drive around the airport, you can often see signs for places in a few block radius.

Good luck! Sorry to hear your news.

I'm also enrolled in this program, and I think it's a great deal.
