Any recommendations on a location easilty accessible from a major airport that would make for a nice long weekend trip to view a great fireworks show? A handy SPG hotel would be nice as well. Looking to burn some Delta or AA miles.

Minneapolis has some events that weekend, including a big fireworks show from the tip of Nicollet Island in the Mississippi River. There are a bunch of Starwood hotels downtown that would be an easy walk from the best views if you can't see anything from your window. BTW, the fireworks cannot be seen at all from anywhere in the LC Hotel Ivy, which would be the farthest away too. The deck on top of the W Foshay Tower might be a good spot if it's open and there's space.

Farther afield, Lake Como has a wonderful fireworks display; some hotels organize special events. There's a traditional big party for/by the American expat community in a park near Geneva.

Doesnt Sydney throw a great party for new year's eve?

  5. Oh, if you get a high-floor room in the westin facing the river you could probably see them in your room--not that you'd really want to, but just in case.

I went to DC one year. Very nice display and you can easily stay somewhere in Virginia and take the metro in.

I second HK for firework. Stay in Sheraton and maybe book a table on the top level (Oyster Bar).

  10. toddreg, you never said when you were planning on going. that might help narrow down suggestions.

Over the 4th weekend, can leave for any period between 6/30 and 7/4. Just thinking about a long weekend somewhere to catch some spectacular fireworks. I let our passports expire so Montrael which I was interested in is out. That looked like a nice trip. The bugs are pretty bad in Minn. as I recall in the summer. NY is typically a hassle. Other ideas????

Eyes to the Skies Festival is known throughout the nation for the wonderful display of hot air balloons. The most spectacular view you can see of these balloons is just before and after the firework shows. The balloons will lift up about a hundred feet and in the darkness of the night you can see the balloons glowing, giving off their own light show.

    Projected Firework Show Times
    July 1 9:45 pm
    July 2 9:45 pm
July 3 9:45 pm (July 3rd will be presented and timed with a musical score)

South Lake Tahoe usually puts on a good show. You can fly in to Reno (45 minutes) or Sacramento (2 hours). Lots of places to stay- casinos or one of the many other hotels or motels in south shore. We got a VIP invite from Harrah's one year which got us on the beach at Edgewood. One of the best shows I've ever seen and I think it is still considered one of the top in the country.

I've been to Washington, D.C. three times now for the parade and fireworks. There is also a televised concert on the Capitol lawn I've been to twice. I learned last trip that they have a full rehearsal the night before so you can actually attend the concert on the 3rd (that's what I did). Should you end up there I'd check to see if that is still the case. I'd be there myself this year but $400+ airfares from SFO aren't going to make that happen.

On my first trip I walked over to the Jefferson Memorial and watched the fireworks from there (quite a way from Metro). On the second trip I watched them from the Capitol grounds, and on my most recent trip (2009) watched them from a park, along with thousands of others, between the Marine Memorial and Arlington Cemetery, walking distance from Rosslyn metro and just 2 blocks away from Hyatt Arlington where I stayed. I'll post some photos of the view from this last location as that is where I'd end up again.

I have quite a few folders of July 4th photos, including the parades, concerts and fireworks, on THIS PAGE.

There's nothing like the concert and fireworks on the Mall in DC on the 4th. I still get chills thinking of the one I experienced over 25 years ago.

That said, I know Philly also does a huge week of celebrations, and I'd think that'd be an easier weekend visit.

NYC Macy's 4th show is pretty good & NYC puts on a lot of free entertainment that weekend, as does Boston, another city with a good show. DC Mall show, as Tom said, is very good.

Not the 4th but for those really into fireworks, check out this http://www.vancouverfireworks.ca/ International fireworks competition in Vancouver every summer & it is spectacular!

Washington will have huge crowds and probably elevated hotel prices in convenient family-friendly facilities, but their could be bargains in more upscale business-oriented hotels.

When July 4th is over a long weekend there are usually multiple fireworks shows in Philly. You can expect one on the Delaware one night and one on the Parkway on the 4th. There is usually a great free concert on the Parkway too.

Random suggestion, but Madison, WI has a pretty impressive show for a smaller venue.

It's a bit of a hike from the Sheraton, but I think there are buses you could take. They also have a college summer-league baseball team that has a game beforehand, with an all you can drink area. It's a good time.

Vancouver WA (right outside of Portland) has a great fireworks display over the Columbia River. You can watch from either side of the river.

The Madison Sheraton seems far from everything. It wouldn't be fun at all to try to drive and park in downtown Madison before fireworks. Even though the map looks like it's on the lake, when I stayed in a club level room on that side of the building, I could not see the water.

100% with you, it's not a great location and the view is nothing special. It is cheap though, Category 2.

It's probably not the best option, but the fireworks show is pretty outstanding. The show itself is on the East side of Madison, making it even more inconvenient, but I'm confident that the OP could manage to find a way over there.
