There have been frequent very long delays for both inbound (non-Brazilians) and outbound (everyone)passport control for non-Brazilians at peak times during the last week. There is very heavy traffic now, and staffing in often not adequate when six or seven widebodies arrive at the same time. That seems to have been a problem mostly for Terminal 1 (AA, AF, AR,BA,CO, DL, IB,KL mostly, but also 747 of TAAG and 777 of Transaero) aggravated because most North American and European flights are arriving in a fairly narrow window, and depart again with a similar short window. Whenever the TAAG flight arrives or departs the wait rises; their 747 is usually full). Baggage claim and Customs is another major bottleneck at peak times. Waits can be very long. O Globo reported yesterday that waits were as long as five hours day before yesterday. I was there, but my wait was 'only' two hours. Arrival Customs delays are exacerbated because back-to-school purchases abroad are very heavy now, so many Brazilians come with three or more bags each. If you can avoid either GRU or GIG on Friday departures or Sunday arrivals, especially during the rest of August.
