While traveling, I love to seek out food and drinks that are local to the area or country that I am visiting. It's especially fun to try out alcoholic drinks native to the area.
Lonely Planet put out a list of The World's Best Booze. They say that a great way to warm the hearts of locals is by drinking the local beverage.
Drinking is a really great way to get to interact with locals. I've had many memorable experiences at the local watering holes.

    The list:
    1. Sake, Japan
    2. Guinness, Ireland
    3. Beer, Belgium
    4. Absinther, Czech Republic
    5. Burgundy wine, France
    6. Caipiroska, Brazil
    7. Becherovka, Czech Republic
    8. George Dickel Tennessee Whiskey, USA
    9. Tequila, Mexico
    10. Vodka, Poland
Not buying the 'logic' of some countries having a broad generic term (Sake or Beer) but some having a specific brand (George Dickel), pehaps LP was looking to get paid via some marketing $?

#6 is a travesty, Caipiroska is made with vodka not cachaça, the latter booze is certainly more Brazilian than the former.

I brought a small bottle of cachaca home with me. I wasn't sure what caipiriska was...
Not sure of item vs. brand or why they did it that way... Maybe there was an incentive.

let's just say I brought home more than that:D The prices for good cachaça in the local's grocery/markets was too cheap to be believed (basically $3 for a bottle that costs near $40 here)

Nice one! I brought home a ceramic looking bottle as a souvenir, not to drink. I pretty much always stick to beer & vodka! However, I am pretty much always open to trying the local drink!

I'm also curious about why absinthe is listed for Czech Republic (or is that the only place one can purchase the real stuff in Europe?)

Good question. I know that I've bought it in two different places in Europe.
