Quite a few of us may have taken to Kingfisher Airlines as our airline of choice in the past few years. It was good while it lasted; it is disheartening to see the airline go down and its future totally uncertain.

A part of the reason why frequent travellers choose to stay with an airline is the frequent flyer programme. Back when Kingfisher was the latest thing to happen to Indian aviation, in an attempt to lure frequent flyers to move business to itself, it offered a very generous offer where you were offered the same privileges as the competitor airlines’ programme. That had a lot many frequent flyers hooked to it, since they did not have to actually fly all those flights all over again to get these privileges on a new airline.

At last count, Kingfisher owed its flyers miles worth approximately Rs22 crore (as per March 2011 annual report). This is the money it owes to people like you and me, who save up their miles for that vacation, and users of their co-branded credit cards. This money will never be paid out in cash, but in the form of award tickets which you can get with Kingfisher Airlines and its partners. And this money is not safe.
