No wonder the past few Mexican and Asian meals I've had that are normally heavy on lime, have been served/made with lemons.

When I asked for limes my Chinatown grocer brought three from under counter and whispered, "Locally grown."

In the 1950s, during a time of severe meat shortages, the UN hired a surveyor to determine difference in response to the situation based on nationality.

The survey taker first stopped an American and asked "Pardon me, sir, what is your opinion of the meat shortage?" The American wrinkled his brow and responded "What's a 'shortage'?"

The survey taker next stopped a Russian and asked "Pardon me, sir, what is your opinion of the meat shortage?" The Russian thought for a minute and replied "What is 'meat'?"

The next person he stopped and asked "Pardon me, sir, what is your opinion of the meat shortage?" was a Chinese diplomat. The diplomat looked quizzical and said "What is 'my opinion'?"

Finally, the surveyor stopped an Israeli and asked "Pardon me, sir, what is your opinion of the meat shortage?" The Israeli looked confused and said "What is 'Pardon me'?"

This is so like a movie plot..., A guy walks into a shop and ask for something extra to help him get by his day, and the shopkeeper stares back, slowly reached down under the counter retrieves a bag of flora, whispering "locally grown".

    Why the secrecy?

Food Lion has had the cheapest limes in our area, and they were 25 cents about a month ago. Last Saturday they doubled to 50 cents a piece. I was shocked at the price increase.

The price Food Lion had on limes was the only reason why I visited--- as other grocery stores were much higher.

FWIW: The wife and I use a LOT of limes, and Food Lion is in walking distance to our residence.

Food Lion: Where we're still hurting from the 20/20 investigation story done in the 1990's.

She has a very limited supply. But I'll give you her address if you promise not to tell anyone.

What a funny string! I think that the concept of a "Milepoint black market" for limes is wonderful! ;)

FWIW, you can also buy both powdered "lime" and also a concentrated lime juice in supermarkets. I've used both, and actually prefer the powdered stuff in mixed drinks. That said, without a doubt, fresh limes are the best, and what is a Perrier without a fresh lime wedge? :(

There's quite a difference in Chinatown in the islands from Chinatown in NYC!

Wow, 2/1$.50! Just picked some up yesterday for 4/$1. The only reason I noted the price is someone in the produce aisle told me she just paid $.50 each at the walmart down the street
