Just wanted to drop the Milepoint community a quick note regarding the lifetime stays and nights counter that currently appears on SPG.com in your account box. SPG received feedback from a few members that the calculations for these stays and nights might be incorrect.

SPG looked into it further and did discover that while the vast majority of our members' data was correct, we did indeed have some members whose lifetime stays and nights were being listed incorrectly. Some member's figures were understated due to merged accounts not calculating the lifetime data properly. Others had figures that were overstated due to things like counting stays/nights prior to SPG's launch in 1999, or counting stays/nights on some ineligible rate plans.

Just wanted the community to be aware in case they see a shift in this figure on their online account.

    Best regards,

And why does it matter if Lifetime numbers are off in either direction? I certainly have no record of my stays back to 1986 (when I am listed as having joined) or from 1999 when the various programs were merged. I would only be concerned about my 2011 numbers which count for Platinum renewal.

So are award nights no longer counted in the lifetime? I just noticed this change last night. If nights prior to 1999 are no longer being counted, does it make sense to say that they are the number of nights since I joined in 1998? (Mousing over the question mark points out that 1998 isn't counted.)

I agree that this is a strange change. I actually thought it more interesting and meaningful for these totals to include award nights. If there's no Lifetime status, then the number of nights actually spent in SPG hotels seems more meaningful. My number dropped significantly, so just last week, I (again) reached 500 (eligible) nights in SPG hotels.

I'm just curious as to why lifetime stay/nights even matter unless this in an indication to Lifetime Status in the near future?

I suppose that I could see how including pre-10/2011 award nights for relatively new members could be misleading.

Someone with 22 eligible stays and 3 award stays in 2011 might have been told that they had 22 stays and 40 nights this year and need 3 more stays for Platinum status. Just below that, they'd have been told that they had 25 stays and 50 nights since joining in 2011. That could be confusing and/or annoying to a new member.

For those of us who have been members for years with lots of nights and stays, the difference didn't stand out to us.

Now that award nights can count toward qualification, will they be included in the lifetime counters if they occurred on/after 10/2011?

I wound up losing ~25 nights, or 3% of my total. Not quite sure where they were erroneously accumulated.
