I was in Australia a few weeks ago and got to visit Perth/Fremantle again--I love the area. I also read about QF and AA each adding a daily B777 flight to Australia: the two flights add just 9% more capacity between the two countries. It got me thinking, why wouldn't UA consider LAX or SFO to PER? Now may not be the best time for the city pairs as the economy softens. It's about 2,000 further and close to the range of a B777: is LAX/SYD to SYD/MEL about the optimal range for a B777?

How much demand is there, especially for business travelers? UA is apparently discontinuing their Guam-Perth service, so they presumably know a bit about the general market.

It's definitely softened recently: it's a feast or famine sort of city.

UA is cutting GUM-CNS. AFAIK UA has never served Perth. And I'd be shocked if there was sufficient demand to justify such a flight. Also, LAX-PER would be well longer than the current longest flight (DFWSYD) or the prior longest (EWRSIN). That means a flying gas can with significant cost challenges, assuming the plane has the range. And I'm not convinced anything in the UA fleet does. The 787-9 range is just enough without headwinds. But the Pacific has lots of those. It would not work.

Didn't realize they were cutting that. It was always kind of an oddball route, although I know why CNS is a destination. Still, for the better part of two decades it was the only destination in Australia CO served.

They've torn apart the GUM mini-hub. I used to take that route a lot to get to Australia. After the merge the price went sky high and I stopped taking it. It was the fastest way to get to Queensland as well as the cheapest C fare.

PER would have a fair amount of US bound traffic, but unlikely to have enough to fill a daily flight. Plus the fact that it is a *very* long way.

I want to say that CO 1 used to be IAH-GUM. Could continue on to PER.

There is always demand for a flight. The question is that sufficient to cover the costs of the flight .

Except CO1 flew IAH-HNL-GUM so your idea of a milk run might not work. ;)
