    Agree that this is a strong indicator. I personally will be unhappy to see LAN with any alliance other than oneworld. I doubt that SkyTeam has much of a chance given that Aerolineas Argentinas will be joining them soon.

    I need to go back to South America before this happens. I have major distaste for AA, its a pity that than LATAM has chosen this direction.

    The opposite for me is true, LATAM staying in OW is critical for me.

    I'm not so sure that they had much say in the decision. The Chilean government stipulated that they could not be a part of the same alliance as Avianca/Taca which effectively blocked them from *A, and as was mentioned, with Aerolineas joining Sky Team, there was really no other option.

    It cannot be SkyTeam anyway because DL explicitly is targeting Latam now so they'd block the entry anyway, if you believe them. I am sure it is OW.

    The formal requirement is to announce the choice by August 2012. In fact, announced or not, the play is moving quickly and will be de facto well before then, it seems. All the smart money is on OW, partly because the operating control is with the Cueto family, so Lan holds the cards. However, there are other issues too, so *A does remain a possibility, just far less likely than OW.

    The Cueto family are known for business acumen, and have been discussing the potential benefits of alliances with Emirates for example, saying that Latam could feed EK with many passengers for all the flights EK is planning to add. It is wise to keep in mind that this play is not even out of the second act... there's much more to happen.

    EK plus several strategically located regionally focused unaligned carriers could almost be a fourth alliance with EK clearly dominant if they wanted to follow this path. That could be very interesting.

    I doubt LA wants to be part of any alliance not OW - they may add a few non-OW-alliance stepbrothers and sisters, as they already have, such as Alaska, Jet Blue, and TAM. They already have a lot of feed from AA and more will be coming from QF since SCL will be the connection point.

    Seems that all fares in SCL have increased across all airlines, so I'd say that it'd be both.
