Just bought one J ticket to PHL-JNB round trip and got an award ticket as well - same flights, same service class. The expected large YQ charge for the purchased ticket was present, but it was not charged for the award ticket.
Detailed Tax Information for award ticket:
    Total Tax: 89.70 USD
    AY 7.50 XA 5.00 XY 7.00 YC 5.50 EV 2.20
    UM 2.50 WC 23.30 ZA 36.70
Detailed Tax Information for purchased ticket:
    Total Tax: 806.60 USD
    AY 7.50 XA 5.00 XY 7.00 YC 5.50 EV 2.20
    UM 2.50 WC 23.30 ZA 36.70 YQ 670.00
    XF 13.50 US 33.40
We know that YQ is NOT a tax - it is a fuel surcharge.
But XF Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) and US U.S. Excise Tax
(aka U.S. Domestic Transportation Tax; U.S. Ticket Tax) - this must be 7.5% of the domestic portion of the fare - were not charged for award ticket.

Not sure whose metal the routing is on, but for US origins going TATL, you're pretty much never going to pay YQ on a DL award. DL collects YQ for most Asian partners (save KE), all award tickets originating in Europe (save KE flights, since they don't know what KE would want for YQ for some reason), and award tickets originating in the Middle East if the ticket includes AF/KL/AZ flights.
